Viola Davis is always a diva. Be it with your Oscar nominations – and award. Whether with his equally award-winning performance on TV in How to get Away with Murder. She is always sensational. Now, she stars in an action movie (although she doesn’t like the name), The King Woman. The film hits theaters this week and is worth seeing.
First the story. The film follows the story of Nanisca (Viola Davis). She was an army commander in the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful places in Africa in the 17th and 19th centuries. During the period, the military group was composed only of women. Among the warriors is the young Nawi, who has just joined the group. Together they fought French settlers, rival tribes and all those who tried to enslave their people and destroy their lands. Known as Agojie, they have to fight a new enemy.
What did I think of the movie?
The appeal of the story for today is clear. Talk about diversity. The Agojie are women responsible for defending their world. The leader, Nanisca, is a black woman in her fifties who is responsible for all of this. And the movie starts with an electrifying battle. It’s enough to make us meet these great warriors. They fight in the name of the new prince (played by John Boyega, who is not very convincing), but it is obvious that they are the great heroines of history. And, of course, there are secrets, and power struggles.
The movie is a little too long, it’s 2h15. It has its problems, but it involves. Photography, soundtrack, scenography are first class. There are inspirations from great epic stories. Nanisca has a big secret that will make her reevaluate many of her actions. Nawi is a young man who does not accept certain pre-established positions. And then there’s Izogie, a mix of friend and trainer, who takes on Lashana Lynch’s powerful performance (the new 007) a great triumph. There are really sensational moments.
The film still has a curiosity for us. There is a Brazilian character who will have great importance in the development of the story. There is slave trade. And the person responsible for this is done by Hero Fiennes-Tiffin, from After. And he even speaks Portuguese – from Portugal, to be clear. But women dominate. In addition to Lashana, there is still Sheila Atim (The Underground Railroad) as Nanisca’s confidant, friend and perhaps something more. Thuso Mbedu, in the role of Nawi, is quite convincing (she replaced Lupita Nyong’o). But, of course, the biggest star is Viola Davis! Nanisca is a brilliant, tough, powerful, intelligent woman. It’s yet another stunning performance by the diva.
