“no stars”. This is how the shirt of the Brazilian men’s soccer team would be if black players had never played for the national team. This is the reflection of the initiative that took place yesterday, the 27th, when the team entered the field to face Tunisia in the last friendly before embarking for the World Cup in Qatar. At 15:30 (Brasília time) at the Parc des Princes in Paris, fans watched, for the first time since the 1958 championship, a team singing the national anthem without a star on the chest of the official CBF jacket.
At the same time, Itaú’s avatars on social networks were exchanged for the image of the “without stars” campaign to stimulate conversations on the subject also in the digital environment. The objective of the initiative is to raise an important debate on the seriousness of racist actions in the universe of the sport most loved by Brazilians and to emphasize that the country’s strength lies in its diversity.
It is worth remembering that one of the main players of the current Brazilian football team, Vinicius Jr., was the victim of racist attacks. The discussion began after statements made on a sports program presented in Spain, which also had consequences for the attitudes of fans of rival teams to Real Madrid, in which Vinicius plays.
The action was conceived in conjunction with the Africa branch and is consistent with the constant actions of Banco Itaú that seek to bring the company closer to ESG agendas.
