At the feet of Christ the Redeemer, Oncologia D’Or launched, this Sunday (16), the campaign “O Ano Todo Rosa”, which emphasizes that care and prevention against breast cancer needs to be carried out all year round and not just in October. To mark the beginning of the initiative, which has the Christ lit up in pink as one of the symbols, a morning of well-being and quality of life was promoted, with patients, former patients and oncologists.
Activities such as yoga and gymnastics classes highlighted the importance of physical activity for the prevention of various types of cancer, but also as an important ally to minimize the side effects of treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
According to the regional director of Oncologia D’Or, Marcus Vinicius J. dos Santos:
“We hope to show how important it is to establish comprehensive health care, not only to prevent breast cancer, but also other tumors and diseases.”
Currently, breast cancer is the second most frequent type of tumor in the world and the one with the highest incidence in women. One in eight women will develop the tumor in her lifetime.
Oncologia D’Or will, through its website and its profiles on social networks, publish simple and direct guidelines made by some of the main oncologists in the country, as well as answer questions common to women. the president of Oncologia D’Or, Paulo Hoff, says:
“It’s important for women to understand, for example, that you can’t wait for pink October to worry about exams and breast cancer prevention measures. This care and attention needs to be throughout the year.”
The campaign “O Ano Todo Rosa” comes precisely to demystify the disease and emphasize the necessary care to prevent or diagnose cancer early. There are still cases of women who avoid mammography for fear of the pain it causes or fear of exposure to radiation, despite the procedure being proven safe and indicated by the best specialists as the main form of prevention.
In many cases, women end up resorting to the exam only when they notice a symptom, which usually indicates that the disease is in an advanced stage, with serious health risks. If diagnosed at an early stage, the chance of successful treatment is 95%.
Oncologist José Bines points out that it is necessary to pay attention to family history, as between 5% and 10% of cases of breast cancer occur due to an inherited predisposition to develop the disease. “When there are cases in the family, it is necessary to pay even more attention to prevention”, he explains. In these cases, an evaluation by an oncogeneticist may be important, who will investigate whether there are inherited mutations that would facilitate the development of different types of cancer.
