I know there are a lot of people who don’t like horror movies. But, I love it, but after you’ve seen so many, as is my case, it’s harder to find one that really “out of the box”. Occasionally even that can happen. And it even manages to give some genuine scares, playing with our expectations. Even using the old haunted house trick… brutal nights, which debuts directly on Star Plus this Wednesday (26). I liked.
In the story, Tess (Georgina Campbell) is a young woman who travels to Detroit for a job interview. However, upon arriving at the place she booked through a website, she discovers that, in the same property she rented, there is a strange man (Bill Skarsgård) staying. Despite her better judgment, Tess decides to settle in anyway and spend the night. It doesn’t take long for the character to realize that her life is in danger.
What did I find?
The film, of course, has all the ingredients you’d expect from a film of its kind. There are the things that don’t make sense – the final fall, for example. But there’s a rainy night, an isolated house, initial fear (but never mind), and a secret in the basement. And it’s obvious that the person will snoop around to see what’s going on over there. Only in movies… But, anyway, brutal nights innovates in many things. First in format – the film follows a narrative that changes entirely in the middle to follow another character (Justin Long). You even think they edited it wrong (lol). But, soon realizes the connection with the rest.
In addition, it has the presence of Bill Skarsgård. He has a Norman Bates vibe to him. And still full of villains under his belt (he’s the clown of It – The thing and here is also a producer). When he opens the door to the house, you’ll soon want to yell at the girl to go away. And this dubiousness provoked by the casting is perfect to help even more in the mood of the film.
In some moments, even because of the house that is in Detroit, you will end up remembering The Man in the Darkness (which I also like). Either way, the film works with its spooky mood, and an occasional, almost nervous mood. But I warn you there’s a lot of blood, and a lot of disgusting stuff. So if it’s not your thing, don’t even try. But if you like to be scared, turn off the lights, put down your phone – and get in the mood. I think you’ll like it.
