There are numerous possession/exorcism movies available to watch. There are the legitimately scary classics like The Exorcist (HBO Max). And there’s also nonsense, like Sacred Exorcism (on digital platforms for rent or purchase). The Devil’s Light which premieres this day 2 in theaters, is in the middle ground. There are some predictable things. But in the end it keeps the attention, and even scares a little.
In the film, cases of demonic possession are on the rise. To help fight back, the Church opened a school to train priests to perform exorcisms. Sister Ann wants to participate, but women can only advise, not direct the practice. However, she believes her destiny is to perform exorcisms. That’s when a teacher feels your special gift. Thus, it allows her to be the first nun to study and master the ritual. Only her own soul will be in danger. After all, the demonic forces she fights reveal a mysterious connection to her traumatic past.
What did I find?
The production is well done, with all that gothic atmosphere of the churches and old buildings. Production took place in Bulgaria. The story also starts from a different principle. After all, it’s a woman wanting to take the lead in an exorcism. Sister Ann is also an atypical character. Although she is called “God’s chosen one”, she dresses like a modern young woman in most of the scenes. There is not much explanation about her hair color. Jacqueline Byers (from the series Salvation, available on Netflix) works fine. It has a calm performance, unlike most of the hysterics we see in films of the genre.
The cast still has Christian Navarro (13 Reasons Why). It also has participations by Virginia Madsen (without much to do), and Colin Salmon, always a strong presence. The Devil’s Light still features Ben Cross, in his last performance before he died.
