Spotify, the main partner of the podcast creators community in Brazil and around the world, presents the Fan Study para Podcast, a data report on podcast listener behavior. The study, which gathers thousands of pieces of information, brings seven great insights based on data still little explored in the podcast universe. Through a macro view, the Fan Study analyzes podcast engagement and reveals “who, what and where they are listening” and “how they are listening”.
Check out the 7 insights from the Fan Study for Podcast below:
- Podcast discovery by Gen Z is growing more than twice as fast as other age groups.
When thinking about what the profile of podcast listeners would be, initially, you might think older people, right? Well, Spotify revealed that the pace of discovery of this type of content by Generation Z is growing at a super fast pace, being more than double that of other generations. This means that Genzers are not only curious, they are always on the lookout for their next favorite podcast.
2. Even the smallest podcasts can have listeners all over the world.
According to the Fan Study, on average a podcast with 30 listeners can have users from up to five different countries, in other words, a much more global audience than one might expect. For every 10 listeners the podcast gains, on average, 1 new one will come from a different country.
3. While Comedy is the most popular genre globally, other preferred genres vary widely across regions.
Listeners around the world have a wide range of favorite genres, but compared to the average global audience, some regions have clear favorites. For example, we see that compared to other regions, Latin America loves fiction podcasts, while the United States and Canada prefer family and children-oriented content and Asia-Pacific Religion & Spirituality.
4. Podcast fans have a very varied taste in podcast genres.
When analyzing the fandoms, it was possible to notice that there are overlaps of preferred categories, such as, for example, 31% of Arts podcast listeners also listen to Comedy. But only 18% of comedy listeners also consume arts podcasts.
5. In a world with reduced concentration time, it’s surprising how much time listeners spend listening to certain podcast genres.
During the study, it was observed that the episode completion rate varies from gender to gender. The listeners most willing to follow the content from start to finish are True Crime and Technology lovers.
6. Fans who follow the podcasts will hear 4 times more content from their favorite creators
It’s no surprise to think that fans being notified of new content available on Spotify’s homepage would be loyal consumers. However, this insight sheds light on the importance of being careful with your fixed audience, rather than just caring about gaining new listeners. The loyalty of new or old listeners contributes to the content being heard regularly.
7. During the first 4 months is when the biggest growth in podcasts happens
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and the same can be said for podcasts’ potential for success. It’s easy to get discouraged when the podcast doesn’t seem to be taking off, but there’s no need to get discouraged. Podcasts on Spotify tend to see their biggest traction within the first four months of the shows’ existence. So don’t be discouraged!
