In 2021, Google announced the Journalism Equity Fund, a commitment to help bring more diversity and equality into the news ecosystem. Independent journalists and small and medium-sized news organizations that produce original content for an underrepresented audience were able to apply to the fund and thus gain the possibility to expand their operations.
Through the Google News Initiative, the company announces globally the 450 organizations, from 52 countries, selected. In Brazil, more than 35 press vehicles will benefit from the investment. The objective is to leverage the production of informative content based on representativeness and serving mainly underrepresented communities. Feminism and peripheral communities, for example, are central themes of some of the selected sites.
Marco Túlio Pires, Google News Lab lead in Brazil, says:
“We want to strengthen a diverse news ecosystem. This fund is a commitment we made to make this happen and through it we will include and train, in the case of Brazil, websites, newspapers and small and medium-sized community radios from different regions of the country, creating a journalism network for underserved audiences. -represented, and additionally contributing to the fight against news deserts.”
