Ubisoft and Riot Games have just announced the “Zero Harm in Comms” research project, a technology partnership that will improve the reach of artificial intelligence solutions to prevent harmful interactions between players. The initiative aims to create an industry-shared database and divide the ecosystems that collect game data, better training AI-powered preemptive moderation tools to detect and mitigate harmful behavior.
Active members of the Fair Play Alliance, Ubisoft and Riot Games firmly believe that creating safe and meaningful online gaming experiences will only be possible through collective action and knowledge sharing. As such, this initiative is a continuation of these two companies’ great journey to build game structures that promote more rewarding social experiences and prevent inappropriate interactions.
Yves Jacquier, Executive Director of Ubisoft La Forge, said:
“Harmful behavior is a serious issue for us, but this is also a difficult issue to resolve. At Ubisoft, we have been working on concrete measures to ensure safe and fun experiences, but we believe that with the games industry coming together we will be better able to address this issue. Through the technology partnership with Riot Games, we will explore better measures to prevent toxicity in games, as we are the developers of these environments with a direct connection to our communities.”
Through the “Zero Harm in Comms” project, Ubisoft and Riot Games are exploring ways to lay the technological foundations for future industry collaborations, as well as create a network that ensures the ethics and privacy of this initiative. Thanks to Riot Games’ highly competitive games and Ubisoft’s diverse portfolio, the database created by the collaboration must cover every type of player and behavior to better train the companies’ artificial intelligences.
Wesley Kerr, Technology Research Lead at Riot Games, commented:
“Inappropriate behavior is not a problem unique to gaming. Every company with an online social platform is working to tackle this challenging space. That’s why we’re committed to working with industry partners like Ubisoft who believe it’s possible to create safe communities and encourage positive experiences in virtual spaces. This project is just one example of our commitment and the larger work we are doing to develop systems at Riot that create healthier, safer, and more inclusive interactions in our games.”
Still in its initial phase, “Zero Harm in Comms” is the first step of an ambitious interprofessional project that in the future aims to benefit the entire player community. As part of the first research exploration, Ubisoft and Riot are committed to sharing the learnings from the early phase of this experiment with the entire industry in 2023, regardless of the outcome.
