The Gotham Awards, which took place last night in New York, is the official opening of the Awards Season. It has a more independent footprint. And it is also of great importance. So much so that one of the most talked about films of the year, Everything Everywhere At The Same Time (available for rent and purchase on Apple TV/Google Play) was the big winner of the night. He bagged Best Picture and Supporting Actor awards for Ke Huy Quan. This was one of the most emotional moments of the night. See the video below:
Gotham has a gender-neutral awards policy. So, there are no actor and actress categories, but leading and supporting roles. Personally, I think that, as this decreases the number of awardees, it takes some of the fun out of the story. That way, favorites like Brendan Fraser (The Whale) e Cate Blanchett (Tar) compete against each other. And in this year’s case, little-known Danielle Deadwyler (Till) ended up winning both.
tributes
In addition to the award winners, the film also had several tributes. This was the case for Adam Sandler, Michelle Williams and for the director of The Woman King, Gina Prince-Bythewood. Focus Features and the film’s cast Fire Island: Pride and Seduction (available on Star Plus) also received honors. Another highlight of the evening was the announcement of the Icon Award for Sidney Poitier, who passed away earlier this year. Jonathan Majors introduced, with a speech he wrote for the actor posthumously. Three of Sidney’s daughters were present.
