Just two months after Henry Cavill announced that he would return to the role of Superman, stepping away from Netflix’s The Witcher series, the actor has confirmed that plans have changed and he will return to play the superhero at DC. The news came after James Gunn announced his first official hero project, which would focus on the hero in his youth.
In his first major move since taking the helm of the DC Cinematic Universe, James Gunn will write a Superman prequel film that will follow a young Clark Kent during his time as a reporter for the Daily Planet, according to international website The Hollywood Reporter. The director explains:
“In the early stages, our story will focus on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill. But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re huge fans and we’ve talked about a number of exciting possibilities for us to work together in the future.”
The news was confirmed by Henry Cavill in an Instagram post, who expressed disappointment with the decision, noting that “the studio told him to announce my return in October, before he was hired.” Cavill’s version of the reunion sounds a little more conclusive, with the actor saying that “he’s not coming back as Superman after all.”

The news comes as a disappointment to some fans, who were hoping to see Cavill return as Superman in the near future, particularly after he appeared in Black Adam’s post-credits scene.
The name of a new actor to play Superman and replace Henry Cavill in Gunn’s scripted film is expected to be officially announced soon. Until then, the rumors do not point to any star to occupy the position, but fans can speculate in the meantime.
