A survey by Abrasce points out that year-end purchases totaled BRL 5.3 billion in the sector
Sales in the Christmas period grew by 10.7% in malls in Brazil, compared to the same period in 2020.
The data is based on the Cielo Expanded Retail Index (ICVA), used by the Brazilian Association of Shopping Centers (Abrasce) to monitor the evolution of sales on commemorative dates, contemplating small and large retailers.
In the period from December 19th to 25th, the average ticket was R$189 against R$197 registered in 2020. Street retail registered an average ticket of R$102 in 2021, against R$104 in 2020.
In the assessment of the president of Abrasce, Glauco Humai, the pandemic scenario is similar to that of 2020, from the point of view of the functioning of the malls. During the same period last year, there had been a reduction in the number of new cases, but growing inflationary pressures on the family budget and the deterioration of the labor market limited the improvement in sales.
“Even in adverse macroeconomic conditions, throughout the year, the shopping center sector showed a gradual recovery, especially from the 2nd semester onwards, with the advances in vaccination and the normalization of activities, allowing for greater mobility for people. This recovery of one of the sectors most affected by the pandemic denotes the resilience and capacity of entrepreneurs to reinvent themselves and overcome barriers”, he highlights.
