Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said job cuts at the e-commerce giant would continue into early next year, in his first public comments since the company began widespread layoffs earlier this week. He wrote in a letter to staff on Thursday:
“Our annual planning process extends into the new year, which means there will be more role reductions as leaders continue to make adjustments. These decisions will be shared with affected employees and organizations in early 2023.”
Jassy said that Amazon “not yet concluded exactly how many other functions will be impacted” for the dismissals, but added that “each leader will communicate with their respective teams when we have the details agreed”.
Amazon confirmed on Wednesday that layoffs had begun at the company, just days after several outlets reported that the e-commerce giant planned to cut around 10,000 employees this week.
Amazon and other tech companies have significantly increased hiring over the past two years as the pandemic has shifted consumer habits towards e-commerce. Now, many of these seemingly untouchable tech companies are experiencing a downturn and laying off thousands of workers as people revert to pre-pandemic ways and macroeconomic conditions deteriorate.
Meta, which owns Facebook, recently announced 11,000 job cuts, the biggest in the company’s history. Twitter also announced widespread job cuts after Elon Musk bought the social network for $44 billion.
Jassy mentioned the macroeconomic climate in his memo on Thursday, saying this year’s annual operational review “is made more difficult due to the fact that the economy remains in a challenging place and we have hired rapidly in recent years.”
The Amazon executive said this is the toughest decision the company has had to make during his year-and-a-half tenure at Amazon. He wrote:
“It has not gone unnoticed by me or any of the leaders making these decisions that it is not just roles we are eliminating, but people with emotions, ambitions and responsibilities whose lives will be impacted.”
