Avatar: The Way of Water is now the seventh biggest movie in the history of the world. After its fourth weekend in theaters, the sequel has already grossed $1.7 billion globally.
The film has already surpassed 2019’s The Lion King ($1.663 billion) and 2015’s Jurassic World ($1.672 billion) and has taken most of its box office in international markets ($1.19 billion) compared to results domestically ($516 million), according to Deadline, which provided all box office numbers.
For its international release, The Way of Water’s biggest markets are China ($188.3 million), France ($107.2 million), Germany ($92.6 million), Korea ($85.6 million) and United Kingdom ($69.1 million). The Way of Water is the fifth biggest film in history based on international box office receipts, behind only the original 2009 Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, Titanic and Avengers: Infinity War.
Avatar: The Way of the Water is also doing well in North America, where it recently surpassed $500 million. Writer-director James Cameron now has three of the top ten films in history under his belt based on box office numbers. 2009’s Avatar remains the highest-grossing film of all time with $2.922 billion, while his 1997 film Titanic grossed $2.2 billion.
Thanks to the massive box office success of Avatar: The Way of Water, Cameron is moving forward with its planned sequels, starting with Avatar 3 in 2024. That movie has already been filmed and some parts of Avatar 4 have also been filmed.
The result may also demonstrate a strengthening of the blockbuster industry. The scenario had been stabilizing since last year after going through a difficult period due to the COVID 19 pandemic, which closed movie theaters around the world and cast doubt on when the market would actually return to provide a significant return.
