After a year of various events in the technology area, what can we expect from next year? Today I’m going to do an exercise in predicting which technologies will be highlighted in 2023. Many were launched in 2022, but they will have their recognition and greater usability in this new year that begins.
Let’s start with 5G, which had its debut here in Brazil on June 6, 2022 in the capital Brasília. This promises to be the technology that will change the global mobile internet and even replace the fixed internet as we know it today. In Brazil, it is expected to be the true democratization of the Internet, as the technology will arrive in places where today the form of communication is still precarious.
Making a quick summary to remember this technology, there are 3 main points:
1 – Navigation with 5G compared to 4G will have an average speed 30 times faster, for example: downloading a movie in HD quality lasting 1 hour takes around 6 hours on average, with 5G it will be enough just 6 seconds.
2 – Latency, which is basically the response time that some application returns with the requested information. For those who like games, you know how essential a low latency is, in 5G it will represent an average of 1 to 4 milliseconds. We currently have around 80 milliseconds on 4G.
3 – The capacity of antenna connections. Maybe you’ve already been through a situation where many people want to use their cell phone at the same time. At a concert in a stadium for example, you notice that you can’t use the Internet or the signal often drops. This is because, despite having a signal in the region, the radio that transmits 4G supports an average of 10,000 devices per square kilometer. The 5G radio will be able to connect around 1 million devices in the same space.
But it is worth remembering that it is not just greater speed, latency or connection capacity that will make 5G the technology to be highlighted in the coming years. In addition to greater stability, it will allow us to advance in the famous IoT (Internet of Things) the Internet of Things and the concept of smart cities.
5G opens the door to the famous Internet of Things, another technology that will be highlighted. In short, “IoT” is anything that connects to the internet, from a light bulb to your car, and this opens up a range of possibilities. We will be able to control everything from our cell phone or virtual assistants or even through the integration between the devices.
We’ve always had the barrier of connection instability and latency. Imagine an autonomous car that needs to query the Internet to make a decision and enters an area that we call the shadow, that is, that does not have an available connection or a high latency, where the car asks the server what it should do and the response takes 20 seconds to arrive with the decision. 5G came to reduce this response time and allow it to be possible to use this technology more efficiently.
Many smart devices may come with an option to configure an “eSIM”, which is a virtual version of the physical cell phone chip. With this you will have a 5G plan, putting the same mobile Internet plan on your smart devices, so smart objects will not be limited to the range of WiFi or a “Zigbee” network. In smart cities, there are still several obstacles to providing Internet for a smart traffic light or smart lights, as we often do not have a way to arrive with quality internet in these places, or even put internet on a bus so that the government and passengers can track it. your location. Although there is something today with 4G, many times the bus disappears in shadow areas or we have a lot of delay to update the real location. 5G will help break down these communication barriers, governments will be able to invest a lot in this area, promoting greater organization and management of city resources.
Another technology that promises to have a practical use and expand will be the METAVERSO. In 2022, much was said about this technology, but we were unable to actually see the real applicability and monetization. It was much more theory than practice, but in 2023 companies promise heavy investments for the use of this technology.
With the growth of the Metaverse, cryptocurrencies have everything to grow exponentially, as virtual universes need their virtual currencies to carry out financial transactions between the real and virtual worlds. It is worth remembering that Metaverso is from the company META, from businessman Mark Zuckerberg, owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, who will create his own virtual currency to be used in this new world.
Following this logic, another technology that will be leveraged will be the NFTs (Non-Fungible Token). An NFT that literally means: “Non-Fungible Token”, that is, it is a unique item, in theory we will not have two alike; it would be like a digital certification that guarantees that the virtual good is unique. In the Metaverse, with virtual things being created to be sold, NFT will be used to ensure that a custom thing you are selling has a warranty to the buyer that it is unique and currently belongs to the buyer.
It is worth remembering that the Metaverse is not the only technology that explores a virtual world. Metaverso was created by the company META, but we have other companies that are betting on this concept, Nvidia owns Omniverse, which received investments in 2022 and promises new contributions in 2023. Another company that works on its own virtual world is Microsoft, which owns Mesh, a meeting platform with holograms. In Teams, which is Microsoft’s communication tool, the creation of 3D avatars was made available. Gaming companies should also invest in this market or attract investment. A recent example was Nike, which created Nikeland within the Roblox gaming platform. Another example was Banco do Brasil, which created a virtual experience within the roleplay server of GTA Online, where it was allowed to open bank accounts and bank investments virtually, through avatars within the game.
Leaving it for the end and, unfortunately, I cannot stop talking about it, 2023 will possibly be the year of cyber scams. An increasingly connected society, with fast Internet on their smartphones, increasingly smart homes is the ease that comes with the dangers of technology.
Many security companies already make this alert. It’s worth remembering that due to the pandemic we’ve been through, we usually buy, work and live online, even criminals have to adapt to the new times.
However, we cannot be discouraged, just as new threats arise, so do new security solutions, so it is important to always be aware of technology news, after all, knowledge is power.
A happy 2023 to all of you!!!
