Physical bookstores must continue to undergo changes, but they must not cease to exist
The sustainability of physical bookstores surrounds the sector. In the preface, costs and the difficulty of keeping prices competitive in relation to platforms summarize the context. Livraria da Vila, Martins Fontes, Cultura, Travessa, Leitura and Curitiba are among the main brands.
The impulse of social networks tends to encourage physical bookstores to grow again, combined with the space for living together and building relationships, suggests Professor Bruno Peres, from ESPM. Rafaella Machado, executive editor of Galera Record, reinforces that physical bookstores are a crucial part of the ecosystem. We do need to encourage them, he warns.

Although affected by the pandemic, networks are growing again. The convenience of virtual shopping finds the stronghold of discoveries in physical stores. Both forces need to be valued, advises Vitor Tavares, president of the Brazilian Chamber of Books (CBL), which in 2021 launched Conexo Livraria.
The project for small booksellers provides access to online structures, and won the Innovation Award at the 33rd International Publishers Congress of the International Publisher Association (IPA), in Jakarta, at the end of 2022.
