What I Found – And Curiosities – Of The 2023 Oscar Nominees

I still haven’t seen some of the 2023 Oscar nominees, which were announced today (12) in Los Angeles. But, from what I’ve seen, I come to the conclusion that I’m not at all in tune with the Academy voters, lol. That’s because two of the films that had the most nominations would never be on my list in my life, lol. Everything Everywhere at the Same Time had 11 nominations, and Os Banshees de Inisherimcom 9. Nothing new on Frontwhich I just saw, and it’s great, there were also 9 – just remembering that the 1930 version won the Oscar for best film, okay?

Another darling of Oscar voters that I also hated is store, which premieres this week at the cinema (the review comes out today). It only goes for Cate Blanchett. And with that, a movie I loved, Babylon, was left out in the most important categories, to only have three nominations. And worse, Margot Robbie, who is simply sensational, didn’t get a nomination.

More snubs

But, of course, it wasn’t just Babylon and Margot who were snubbed by the Oscars. Viola Davis (Woman-King) e Danielle Deadwyler Till) were figures considered certain in the best actress category. They ended up out with the nominations of Andrea Risenborough and Michelle Williams. Another surprise was the absence of James Cameron (Avatar: The Way of Water). In “your place” Ruben Östlund came as a surprise, for Triangle of Sadness (which I’ll watch next week).

By the way, speaking of directors, you can expect that many people will comment on the absence of nominated directors. There was much talk of Sarah Poley (Women talking) or Charlotte Wells (After sun). It didn’t work for them this year. As for supporting actors, I missed Keke Palmer (Not! Do not look) and also by Paul Dano (The Fabelmans). By the way, speaking of Fabelmanswhat an interesting surprise the inclusion of Judd Hirsch for a small appearance in the film.

Curiosities

And we need to talk about the veterans who got their first Oscar nomination. Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis (Everything Everywhere at the same time) e Angela Bassett (Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever After). All deserved – and Angela is already the favorite. It’s sensational! It is also interesting to note that for the first time since 1935, all Best Actor nominees were nominated for the first time. And also that of the 20 actors nominated in the four categories, 16 received a nomination for the first time.

Another curiosity of the Oscar 2023 is that of the 10 nominees for the best film award, only one – Nothing New on the Front – director debuted on streaming. All were shown in the cinema first. And among the 20 actors, only two were in movies that were released on streaming. San Ana de Armas (Blonde/ Netflix) e Brian Tyree Henry (Causeway/ Apple TV Plus).

Yeah, but after kicking your ass, the trick is to accept that these are the candidates, right? The Oscars will take place on March 12th, and the master of ceremonies will be Jimmy Kimmell again. See below the list of nominees and where to watch the main ones:
