It’s been three months since James Gunn and Peter Safran took over the helm of the DC film project. And since then they have shown that the idea is to change everything that was there. Starting with dispensar Henry Cavill of the role of Superman. But today (31), Gunn and Safran met with the press to show which path they will follow.
An interesting thing is that, with the exception of Cavill, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller and Zachary Levi would have the door open to return to their characters in the future. But they were very specific saying that there are no directors and actors attached to the projects yet. The exception is Viola Davis. She will star in a miniseries for HBO that will follow in the footsteps of Amanda Waller, the character she created in Suicide squad of 2016.
Safran and Gunn’s idea is to release two films a year. But so far, only two have dates. Superman: Legacy e The Batman Part II, with Robert Pattinson. The latter will stand apart from the DC world of Gunn and Safran, along with the second film in the joker by Joaquim Phoenix. The Batman Part II will be released in October 2025. But, see below a list of what comes from James Gunn’s imagination:
Cinema
- Superman: Legacy will hit theaters in July 2025, and will be the opening of the new DC universe. Gunn is writing the script, but makes it clear that it will no longer be an origin story. It will show Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing, according to the synopsis.
- The Autority will come right after this Superman movie. It’s an ensemble film that features a group of superhumans with a not-so-idealistic vision to save the world. The inspiration is the Wildstorm comics.
- The Brave and the Bold will start a new Batman universe (which is different from the Robert Pattinson movie). It will introduce the Bat-family, with Robin playing Damian Wayne in that version.
- Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will feature Kara Zor-El from the comic book version of Tom King.
- Swamp Thing (Swamp Thing), which will investigate the origins of the character. It will be more of a horror movie, but the Monster will interact with other characters. There is a big rumor that Guillermo Del Toro could direct the film.
TV
- Creature Commandos will be an animation that will premiere on HBO Max. It was the first thing to be approved and is already in production. They were created in 1980 and the story was about hunting Nazis. Not yet and who knows if the animation will follow the same path.
- Waller will absorb the cast of The Peacemaker, which is “on Hold” for now. Even because the path of the end of the first season of the series crossed with that of Amanda Waller. The series must premiere before the start of DC’s new phase in cinema begins.
- Lanterns will bring a series that will show Hal Jordan (the character played by Ryan Reynolds in the Green Lantern 2011) and John Stewart (an ex-sailor), who investigate a mystery that “will play a big part in the main story we’re going to tell in film and TV”, according to Safran.
- Paradise Lost is going to be a prelude series in the style of Game of Thrones which will take place on Themyscira, before the birth of Diana/Wonder Woman.
- Booster Gold will be a comedy, which will follow the story of Mike Carter. He’s a loser from the future who uses technology to arrive in the present day and pass himself off as a superhero,” according to Safran.
