It’s no secret that eSports have been growing at an accelerated pace in recent years, as a result of professionalization, investments and ever-increasing events. In 2022, for example, streamer Alexandre Borba Chiqueta, known as Gaules, reached a record 710,000 concurrent viewers in Brazil when broadcasting a Counter-Strike championship game by the Brazilian eSports team Imperial. To get an idea of this number, the game between Flamengo and Palmeiras for the 2022 Brazilian Championship had an audience of 3.8 million spectators. It is worth mentioning that many Brazilian homes still do not have access to the Internet and football remains the sport with the most fans in the country. Exposing this gap, we can imagine the growth potential that the gaming audience has in Brazil, today with around 214 million inhabitants.
According to the Game Brasil 2022 survey (PGB 2022), 63.2% of gamers say they follow or watch eSports. In addition to the Gaules live, which reached impressive numbers, the CS:GO Major in Rio de Janeiro, in November last year, reached a peak of 1.4 million simultaneous viewers, a number greater than many sporting, musical events and entertainment around the world.
The scenario for 2023, therefore, is very promising, as in previous years. One of the assets, especially for mobile games, must be the implementation of the 5G network in Brazil. With a mobile internet with greater speed and reach, the number of crashes, bugs and legs should decrease – as we all hope – substantially, which will certainly make mobile games more attractive for anyone interested in seeking a democratic and flexible leisure time. , which can be enjoyed from a device at any time (since the multiplayer matches happen 24/7) and anywhere, whether on the bus to work or even waiting for a doctor’s appointment.
Part of this democratization also involves cloud gaming, which has been growing substantially worldwide (albeit more timidly in Latin America). This is a trend that tends to expand in Brazil along with 5G and, above all, to democratize games for people who today are unable to assemble a setup for titles like Fortnite and other less accessible ones. Platforms like Xbox Cloud and GeForce Now, which allow players to enjoy titles on any device, point out that the future of games goes through the cloud, in addition to the connectivity and play anywhere that mobile offers.
There is yet another factor that should benefit mobile games and apps this year: the fact that the console industry is dealing with many delays in the development of new titles, which ends up discouraging users of this platform. The most famous example is Cyberpunk 2077, which was even withdrawn from the market to fix bugs even after several delays in development. All these indications place cell phones as one of the most viable and versatile options for enjoying games (as well as live streams and transmissions), especially when we take into account the number of 242 million smartphones in Brazil, according to the FGV – more cell phones than inhabitants!
Another example that gives us an idea of the strength of mobile in 2023 is that the first edition of CPN, the Free Fire championship created by Bruno Góes, Nobru, in 2020, will have an unprecedented format 100% disputed in this category, that is, no emulators. The tournament will also feature the professional lines of the teams that compete in the LBFF (Brazilian Free Fire League) due to the different calendar being adopted this year.
The country is already a very strong name in the global gamer scene. We currently occupy the 5th place in the ranking in number of enthusiasts, still dominated by China (1) and the United States (2), countries with population and economy considerably larger than ours. On the other hand, it is encouraging to know that even with all the difficulties that the Brazilian gamer nation still faces, there is a growing number of brands, organizations and even celebrities who have noticed how promising this market is and are earmarking large amounts of investment to help in the development of the sector. Here’s to 2023, the year of mobile.
