There are a lot of shows with powerful women in their lead roles. It was difficult to choose these six. But I tried to choose very different women, who follow completely opposite paths. But they’re all powerful — and the shows are great. All are streaming.
Grey’s Anatomy – Star Plus
There are 19 seasons on the air (18 currently on Star Plus), the saga of Meredith Gray is sensational. She arrives as an intern at Seattle Grace, and goes through everything possible and imaginable. She becomes a highly respected and award-winning doctor, but loses a lot along the way. This year, her interpreter, Ellen Pompeo, will step away from the series, but will continue to be the narrator. It will be very strange to follow the series, which I’ve watched since the first season, without her.
Small Fires – Prime Video
Miniseries with two very strong characters. Perfect housewife Elena Richardson (Reese Witherspoon) rents the guest house to Mia Warren (Kerry Washington), an enigmatic single artist who moves to Shaker Heights with her teenage daughter. In a short time, the two become more than mere tenants: all four children of the Richardson family are delighted with the new residents of Shaker. However, Mia carries a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to unravel such a carefully ordered community.
Mare of Easttown – HBO Max
Mare (Kate Winslet) is a local police detective who was once a keen athlete. Today, she is a divorced woman, who has experienced a great tragedy. She has a difficult life, living with her mother, daughter and grandson. At the same time, she has been unsuccessfully trying to solve the case of a young woman who has been missing for over a year. So much so that her superior calls a detective from another city to work with her. That’s when a murder happens. Kate Winslet won several awards for her performance here.
The Empress – Netflix
The first season (the second has already been approved) has six episodes. The Emperor of Austria, Franz, or Francis, is to be engaged to the noble Helene of Bavaria. She arrives accompanied by her mother and sister Elizabeth (Sisi, here with only one s) for his birthday event, where the engagement should be announced. Only when he meets Elizabeth, who is rebellious and different from everyone else, an intoxicating love is born between the young couple. And this, of course, completely upsets the power structure at the Viennese court. After the wedding, the young empress must assert herself before her mother-in-law, the sovereign and power-hungry Sophie. And before Franz’s brother, Maxi, who longs for the throne (and for Sisi).
The Crown – Netflix
Of course The Crown could not be missing from this list with so many special women. Starting with Queen Elizabeth, lived here by three actresses in the five seasons available. And also Princess Diana, played by two actresses. The series begins shortly before Elizabeth takes the throne and follows the various moments of her life as a queen and as a woman. It is excellent!
Buffy the Vampire Slayer – Star Plus/ Globoplay
Buffy had seven seasons, the first three of which were sensational. It follows the story of the chosen one, Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar), who is responsible for defending the city – and the world – from vampires. The series shows how a young woman has to accept the path chosen for her as she tries to live like a normal person. She touches especially on problems of adolescence, loss, the path to choose. I really like!
