Scream 6 is being promoted to mainstream audiences in the US with an unusual and even disturbing marketing campaign that has, to say the least, raised eyebrows. The film’s iconic killer, Ghostface, has been spotted in various locations across the country, prompting 911 calls from frightened bystanders. Ultimately, there’s no cause for alarm, as sources close to the film confirmed to American magazine Variety that it’s all part of the film’s promotion.
Paramount Pictures, which is producing the film, declined to comment on the promotional campaign. It is worth remembering that Paramount did something similar for the horror film Smile, with hired actors sitting behind home plate and displaying disturbing smiles at MLB Baseball games, the main American league of the sport.
Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, Scream 6 is the first film in the franchise without its protagonist Sidney Prescott, played by actress Neve Campbell, who left the film because of a salary dispute. The new film — which hits theaters March 10 — will star Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Hayden Panettiere and Courteney Cox, and follows the residents of Woodsboro as they move to New York City, where they are hunted by a new Ghostface assassin.
Created almost 30 years ago by Wes Craven, the Scream franchise was successful in the genre for satirizing horror films, especially slash ones. The franchise was rebooted after more than 10 years with 2022’s Scream, which grossed nearly $140 million worldwide.
