In 42 years of uninterrupted production, Volkswagen do Brasil manufactured more than 8.5 million Gol units, of which more than 1.5 million were exported. Launched in 1980, the Gol was the most produced model, most sold in the national market and most exported, also being the sales leader in the country for 27 years.
This Volkswagen icon is no longer part of the production line, giving way to its replacement: the Polo Track. Gol’s farewell was marked by the transformation of a unit from the farewell version, the Gol Last Edition, into the beams of Vila Belmiro.
To make this idea possible, it was necessary to disassemble the vehicle, select some parts and melt them in a boiler with more than 500ºC. Then, the metal was used to manufacture the official goalposts of Vila Belmiro, which debuted in Santos Futebol Clube’s first official match of the season for the Campeonato Paulista, when they beat Mirassol by 2×1.
Livia Kinoshita, executive manager of Marketing Communication at Volkswagen do Brasil, says:
“We, from Volkswagen do Brasil, embraced the unprecedented idea of transforming the Goal into goalposts in Vila Belmiro, leaving the model in history. The Volkswagen Gol is an icon and inaugurated a new phase in the national automobile industry. Just like football, Gol is a passion, it is in the hearts of Brazilians and deserved a farewell equal to its success.”
And the Estádio Urbano Caldeira was not chosen by chance. Popularly known as Vila Belmiro, the Santista stadium was the farewell stage for Gol precisely because Santos is the team with the highest number of goals in world history. There are 12,868 goals, 1,091 of which were scored by King Pelé.
From now on, the Memorial das Achievements, in Vila Belmiro, will have a new monitored visit. The new beam has a QR Code that leads to the farewell video of the Volkswagen Gol that became a “goal”, in addition to testimonials from Santos FC stars and their memories with the iconic Volkswagen do Brasil car, such as that of the idol Edu, who won a Goal for his excellent performance on the pitch.
The testimonials also bring stars such as striker Ketlen, goalkeeper João Paulo and striker Léo. Just point your cell phone at the goal post QR Code and enjoy all the stories, including the unusual transformation of the car into the goal goal of the Alvinegro stadium. For the legendary Edu, there was no better way for the car to end its visit to Brazil:
“An unforgettable symbol needed to be represented in an immortal way and that’s what we see today. The team with the most goals in the world, the country with the most goals in the world, both sharing the only Vila Belmiro, the same house.”
The action was developed by AlmapBBDO and the novelty is part of the initiatives that mark the farewell of the Volkswagen Gol, including a match against Novo Polo Track and the sending of seven Gols model 2014 to Germany during the last World Cup in rematch of the game that entered the history of Brazil x Germany.
