“When I decided to make a film about a woman who had a desire for violence in Brazil, I understood that I was unable to make a film of this type without contextualizing violence, without understanding that violence is actually the result of many things, the our desires are the result of many things and we live in an absolutely sexist, patriarchal country… To talk about it, I thought that the Public Defender’s Office was the best place”, says the director.
The protagonist claims that the role was a great challenge in her career.
“Simone is a character that challenges me, puts me at risk. She inspires me, makes me want to dive into a totally unknown place, today a little more known and recognized. In terms of strength, social confrontation, we are close, but in this place of desire, of freedom to find, within this conservative society in which we live, the possibility of living our most intimate desires, I think it is a challenge for me, and that’s why I accepted”, reports Sol Miranda.
In 2022, the film won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Festival in Switzerland, one of the most traditional in Europe. The last Brazilian film to win the main prize at the festival was “Terra em Transe”, by Glauber Rocha, in 1967. The production also received the Special Jury Prize at the 43rd edition of the Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana, in Cuba.
