Unilever, one of the largest consumer goods companies in the world, managed to include an average of 27% recycled plastic, that is, post-consumer plastic, in the packaging of all brands in the Brazilian portfolio by the end of 2022. attributing value to used plastic and directly combating plastic pollution, the company rose 6 percentage points in the recyclability index, compared to 2021, when it obtained 21%.
At the end of 2022, the company managed to advance the global target by three years. In October 2020, Unilever made a global commitment to reduce the use of virgin plastic by 50% and use 25% recycled plastic in packaging by 2025.
“Unilever is committed to innovating to reduce, reuse and recycle, and our goals and actions include plastic packaging, food waste and waste from factories and operations. In Brazil, progress is notorious and all our brands are involved, which certainly contributes to the company’s global goals. We are on the right path, with all of our business groups and brands united by the same objective”, says Suelma Rosa, head of Unilever’s Reputation and Corporate Affairs.
Investment in innovation and technology permeates all Unilever brands, which see the circular economy as the path to a waste-free world. Between 2018 and 2022, the company has already reduced the use of 32 thousand tons of virgin plastic in its packaging, which resulted in around 46 thousand tons of CO₂ less in the environment. This is equivalent to approximately 2,300 trucks loaded with plastic, or neutralizing the consumption of plastic by 1 million people.
A pioneer in using post-consumer plastic resin on a large scale, Unilever’s efforts to boost the recycled plastic chain were recognized globally in 2021 at COP26. That year, Unilever Brasil was selected to present the case of plastic circularity in Glasgow (Scotland). In 2022, at the United Nations Environment Assembly, Unilever announced its adherence to the Global Plastics Treaty, a document considered the most important multilateral “green” pact since the Paris Agreement.
