A leading national ice cream brand, Kibon is also committed to eliminating Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) emissions within the Unilever group. Therefore, the brand began to invest in changes in its logistics operations, initiating the progressive replacement of its fleet of trucks with clean energy vehicles, reaching the metropolitan routes of all its distribution centers by 2026. To identify the new vehicles, the brand has created a new design inspired by the drawing made by the son of one of its collaborators.
The Unilever group has been working towards the goal of reducing its CO₂ emissions by 40% by 2030 and to zero, by 2039, the carbon footprint of products, from the acquisition of raw materials to points of sale. As reported by Adnews last week, the company included an average of 27% recycled plastic, that is, post-consumer plastic, in the packaging of all brands in the Brazilian portfolio by the end of 2022, and with that, managed to anticipate three years of the global target.
For Kibon, with the implementation of electric vehicles in its fleet over the next three years, starting with the replacement of 20 combustion vehicles with electric ones in 2023, the brand foresees a reduction of around 30% in its CO₂ emissions.
“We have a public and global commitment to a positive environmental impact, promoting several green initiatives, programs and operations in our brands. In our logistics, 98% of CO₂ emissions come from transport. For this reason, Kibon intensified the presence of electric vehicles to replace combustion vehicles. The gradual expansion of electric vehicles is part of an ecosystem of sustainable actions, and this renewal will also maintain Kibon’s excellence in the logistics area, recognized in a more sustainable way”, explains Luiz Henrique Dente, Ice Cream Leader at Unilever Brasil.
The first Kibon Distribution Center (DC) to receive the electric car versions is in Taboão da Serra (SP), which now has five 100% clean energy vehicles in its fleet, and another 15 should be incorporated into the fleets of CDs from the country until the end of the year. The goal is that, by 2026, all of the brand’s Brazilian Distribution Centers will have electric vehicles in their fleets, in addition to units to charge cars, which have a range of up to 250 km with a full charge.
“Any sustainable change is a process that needs time and commitment, and we are committed to this initiative. For you to have an idea, the implementation of 20 electric vehicles is already equivalent to the preservation of more than 12.2 thousand trees. It is yet another step towards decarbonisation, which is part of our ESG agenda, which permeates Unilever’s entire business model, as we know that in order to achieve our purpose of making sustainability part of everyday life throughout the chain, we need to be truly prepared for the future, making us increasingly faster and more flexible to anticipate the changes that are shaping the industry”, says Suelma Rosa, Head of Reputation and Corporate Affairs for Latin America and Brazil at Unilever.
Design through the eyes of a boy
The brand’s commitment to the future is a source of pride for its employees, who understand the purpose of making the world a happier place and are engaged in the brand’s sustainability projects, a feeling they convey to their family members. Maria Goes, who acts as coordinator of Customer Experience of the brand, for example, participated in the internal challenge of the supply chain to create the art of the new trucks, bringing important elements of decarbonization. The drawing, made by her alongside her 8-year-old son Bernardo, was chosen, and based on the boy’s attentive look, the Brocco agency developed the communication that stamps Kibon’s new fleet.
“We have the habit of drawing together, and Bernardo from an early age absorbed the importance of preserving the environment, expressing his ideas of a better world on paper. I believe that the design was awarded because it translates sustainability into the vision of two generations: mine, who saw the need to review conducts and behaviors for the good of the planet, and his, who will have the opportunity to improve positive journeys already started”, says the collaborator.
