Starting with World Environment Week, the exhibition ‘Vivacity – Socio-environmental Poetics’ encourages people from São Paulo to explore the Burle Marx Park, located in Vila Andrade, in the south of the city. In addition to contemplating the preserved stretch of what remains of the Atlantic Forest of São Paulo, the invitation is to reflect on the quality of the air we breathe, climate change and the demographic density of a megalopolis like São Paulo.
It is a digital art exhibition that addresses reflections on the impact of new technologies, the growth of cities and the natural world. The event takes place from June 3 to 18, with free access.
This gift to citizens comes from the production company Cult.Bit, by Marília Pasculli and João Frugiuele, sponsored by Meta/Facebook and carried out by the Municipal Support Program for Cultural Projects (Promac).
In its second edition, the project returns to São Paulo after a decade. It is worth remembering that, in 2013, ‘Vivacidade – Poéticas Socioambientais’ occupied Avenida Paulista with six digital works.
In the exhibition, the digital artists Rizomatique and VJ Suave are in charge of provoking a reflective discussion about the expansion of the metropolis, both in territory and in technological implementation, so that it can meet social demands without leaving aside the balance with environmental preservation.
The language is aimed at children and young people due to its pedagogical nature. However, due to the outdoor format, it impacts a massive audience. The interactivity of the exhibition ‘Vivacity – Poéticas Socioambientals’ takes place through intuitive technological tools, such as softwares of digital design and data visualization. In this way, the public acquires an artistic experience of co-creation of the works.

we breathe (2023)
Artist: Rizomatique
Location: Bosque das Jabuticabeiras
A light sculpture that reflects the air we breathe, in real time, from the collection of data on the concentrations of pollutants in the city’s air, released by the Environmental Company of the State of São Paulo (CETESB). At each moment, the installation has a different colored light spectrum. The public’s interactivity takes place through a tablet with a colorful menu. Each color corresponds to one of the most common air pollutants in São Paulo: inhalable particles (PM10), fine inhalable particles (PM2.5), smoke (FMC), ozone (O₃), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide ( NO₂) and sulfur dioxide (SO₂). All these elements are invisible to the naked eye, but the sculpture reveals them through the color spectrum (light/dark) corresponding to the concentration of the pollutant in the air.
tropical garden (2023)
Artist: VJ Suave
Location: Bosque das Jabuticabeiras
The artists created a digital forest similar to the Atlantic Forest, with animated flora and fauna and represented in two scenarios: a lake to highlight aquatic species and the dense forest, with birds and other terrestrial beings. The participant receives a tablet to draw on (through the software Tagtool) other endemic species of the Atlantic Forest that can be seen in Burle Marx Park. The work entertains and alerts to the urgency of global climate measures for the survival of species.
It is worth remembering that when we talk about climate change, we are impacted by the image of a polar bear balancing on an iceberg. However, the Southern Hemisphere is the most affected and least responsible for the climate imbalance. In recent years, the number of fish, birds and even butterflies is decreasing in what’s left of the Atlantic Forest, and countless species are at risk of extinction.
The works of digital art seek, in a playful way, to bring light, reflection and awareness about issues inherent to humans, their care for the planet, and inevitably, with humanity itself.
