Millions of people have already “hummed” their jingles, and there are also those who know him as the vocalist and guitarist of the national group The Clevers. This was Francis Monteiro, publicist and composer who will be honored on the album ‘NOUTRAS MÃOS – Os Temas Nunca Gravados by Francis Monteiro’. The album will feature original original songs, and will hit digital platforms next Saturday (10). On the same day, there will also be a launch in a show at Jazz B, at 9 pm, with appearances by Trio Corrente, Fábio Peron, Neymar Dias, Swami Jr., Toninho Ferragutti and Brazuquinté.
The project that portrays the work of Francis has his own son, Thiago Monteiro, as artistic director, pianist with Grammy nominations and also creator of the Blaxtream label. The idea of the tribute still alive came shortly after Francis suffered a stroke, in 2019, and was prevented from continuing to play due to motor sequelae.
In addition, Thiago gathered unpublished works by his father and invited the same artists present at the concert held at Jazz B to perform them on an album that had the guitar as its central instrument. The recording was attended by the honoree himself, who died in 2022, before the album was finished.
The repertoire consists of the songs ‘Estrada do Engenho’, ‘Estudo 27’, ‘Vamo Lá Garoto’, ‘Muros Mouros’ and ‘Choro Pro Sivuca’, all compositions by Francis Monteiro, and ‘Choro em Valsa’, from his partnership with André Marques. All arrangements are by the publicist.
History of Francis Monteiro
Born into a family of artists, Francis began his career in Jovem Guarda, in The Clevers, a group with which he released ten albums. During a season at the ‘O Beco’ concert hall, in 1972, Abelardo Figueiredo commissioned him to compose the music for the launch of the Chevrolet Chevette in Brazil. There began his career as a creator and advertising producer.
Then he plastered the jingle for Riachuelo, which was a success in the same year. At the same time, she played for six years with the Jongo Trio, one of the most important groups of the MPB transition period, with strong jazz influences.
The second of jingles that he composed became a milestone in the country’s propaganda for innovating, and consequently accumulating numerous awards: ‘Duchas Corona, a bath of joy in a world of hot water’. His creations were consecutive successes, making him one of the biggest references in jingles from Brazil. There were more than 27,000 jingles created and produced throughout his career, a milestone that can be recognized by the Guinness Book.
Its awards include 2 Clio Awards (the Advertising Oscar), 10 Professionals of the Year (Globo) and dozens more throughout Brazil. In the 1980s, Francis Monteiro was also invited to assume the position of musical director at TV Bandeirantes (currently Band), and later also at TV Record. He produced albums for artists, TV presenters, in addition to composing, mainly with guitar and acoustic guitar, a very rich work that had not been recorded.
