Professor, ex-BBB21 and presenter tells how his career began in the classroom and his post-reality show turn
João Luiz Pedrosa was one of the prominent names of Big Brother Brasil 2021. In the edition, João won the hearts of the public with his charisma, scores and didactics in explaining the most diverse topics.
Professor and master in education, Joo is currently one of the main voices on the internet, in addition to being at the forefront of programs such as Trace Trends.
The charisma shown on national television during the reality show made eyes turn to João, who today also works with renowned brands in the market such as Smirnoff, Chevrolet, Terra, Deezer, Santander, Budweiser and many others.
To the propmark, he tells how it was to leave the classrooms to venture into the program, the beginning of his career as a teacher and how this helps him in the work he does with brands. Read the interview in full:
João, before being known nationally and having participated in BBB 21, you are a training teacher. Why did you decide to pursue this career?
I have always had a great appreciation for education. Becoming a teacher came from this desire to want to teach and be able to talk about things in the world. I believe that education can transform our lives, so following a career that, even knowing the difficulties, inspires me to think of a better world makes me very happy. About the program, actually I wanted more and I applied, I passed the selection process and entered the program to be able to… earn a million and a half! [risos]
How was the decision to move away from the classroom and face reality?
In 2021, I was teaching during the pandemic, so my classroom was already being reinvented. I taught classes via cell phone, computer, in other ways, where I somehow managed to access these students. So, it was also a decision to try to face a new reality, a new context.
What were your expectations with your participation?
Regarding my expectations, it was not possible to project what I wanted or not to do, because each edition is different, right!? People behave from a certain situation inside the house. So, I didn’t have expectations created that way, because I’m a very realistic person.
Did you expect that both your participation and the edition would have so much repercussion?
Somehow, I imagined, because we were coming from the success of previous editions and, given that people were consuming more and more entertainment products due to social isolation, I imagined that it could be a way for us to get closer to the people who were watching us on TV.
What were your plans for the ps program? How did you imagine your participation would be?
I didn’t have very specific plans laid out. I didn’t enter with the aim of gaining a follower. I wanted to earn money and try to change the reality of my life, so everything I’ve been reaping since then was something that surprised and still surprises me, but I’m very happy!
How was it for you to enter this world of being a well-known person?
It was easy, I’ve always been a very communicative person and I’ve always been able to relate very well, so I didn’t have any fear, nor anything that would stop me from being or not being a known person, because, in fact, dealing with people , becoming a communicator, was already something that was within my essence.
And deal with the brands? How was it for you to start having jobs like that?
Entering this universe was something very surprising for me. Being able to deal with the brands and seeing these work partners is very interesting, because we establish a double exchange relationship, in the sense that I really need to believe in which project I am involved in and which brand I am associating myself with, because, in fact , we need to be responsible within this work.
What do you take into account when closing a job with a brand or company?
I think, at the end of the day, no amount of money is worth everything I believe and what it takes to be honest with my audience. If people are following me, following me on social media, for some reason, because they actually identify with me at some point. For me to accept a job or associate myself with some content, they need to be things that I believe in, that I consume, brands that also have a certain responsibility, so that I can be sincere with my audience all the time.
You are a teacher, presenter, columnist and recently finished your master’s degree. How do you intend to proceed with all the action fronts?
I think it’s funny to realize that, because I can apply all my training, my profession as a communicator or as a teacher, also on these content fronts, which are things I fell in love with doing, from finishing my master’s degree to hosting a television show. That too is part of communicating something. So, I can also associate things that have always crossed my mind, be it related to music, art, culture, entertainment itself, so that I can do the things I like and believe in and that I can follow on these content fronts, because they are things that I really fell in love with doing it.
Does being an educator help you in public life? If yes, how?
Yes, because communicating is one of the main points of a teacher’s profession. There’s no way you can be a teacher before you’re a communicator. So, I believe that I cannot dissociate my profession from everything I do today.
Today, post-BBB, do you see yourself as a brand?
I think this is inevitable, but it is also important to realize that markings are made by people and that, above all, I am a person, an individual, and this individual has feelings, has sensations, is sad, happy… He has his oscillations too, then understand that because we see ourselves as a brand it is not that we are 100% a product. We, too, remain human beings.
What is the best definition of the João Luiz Pedrosa brand?
I could define it as responsibility. I try to do this a lot in my work, which is to follow with responsibility and sincerity, always realizing that we are within a social context and that we need to be responsible with that and with what has happened within our contemporary context today. So I guess I would define it this way: responsibility and communication
