Less than two months before the first edition of the biggest festival in São Paulo (SP), a press conference presented the progress and the first results of the ‘Favela 3D’ project (Digital, Digna e Developed), a partnership between The Town and the NGO Gerando Falcões, with support from the São Paulo State Government, the São Paulo City Hall, Gerdau, the Volkswagen Group Foundation and the Vozes das Periferias collective.
On May 30th, representatives of The Town, Gerdau and Gerando Falcões gathered in a first press conference to announce, in addition to the partnership, various news about the festival. At the event, the action carried out in Favela Haiti, located in the Southeast Zone of São Paulo (SP), which guarantees the fulfillment of goals that make up the Favela 3D project, was presented. The institutions came together with the objective of breaking the cycle of poverty in the community through a scalable and sustainable methodology that is already being implemented.
Now, a new meeting with the press took place last Wednesday (5), in the Haitian favela itself, to show the rapid advances of the project in the community. The singers Ludmilla and Criolo, highlights in the line-up from The Town (on the Skyline and The One stages, respectively), were present around the place, had the opportunity to get to know the project in depth and were invited by residents to visit the renovated houses.
During the press conference, the progress of actions carried out so far was presented, which involve housing improvements, water supply, sanitation and installation of hydrometers (in partnership with Sabesp), training of community leaders, construction of sustainable two-story and two-story buildings and the Museum of Public Art, in addition to publicizing, at first hand, the project to renovate the central square and mapping all the families that will be part of the Takeoff Program.
With the initiative, 290 families (the equivalent of around 1,000 people) are already being impacted by actions that promote community strengthening, employability, entrepreneurship, professional training and individualized follow-up.
The project is part of the ‘For a Better World’ purpose, which connects people through music and helps transform lives through causes. According to Roberto Medina, president of Rock World (the company that idealized and organizes The Town and Rock In Rio), since 1958, Rock In Rio was already thinking about actions to build a better world, and The Town will follow the same philosophy.
“In the first edition of Rock in Rio, we had a focus on making people aware of the fact that small attitudes in everyday life are the way to make the world a better place for everyone. Since then, we have continued to seek to inspire citizens, companies, bodies and institutions to join us in spreading this initiative throughout Brazil, promoting changes in the quality of life of thousands of people. We are going to use all of The Town’s communication power to broaden necessary conversations, drawing the attention of public policy and the business community as a whole, so that effective changes in society can take place”, says Roberto.
And the results, production?
So far, the project in Favela do Haiti has 23 homes that have undergone housing improvements, delivery of two new projects for sustainable homes and water supply for 100% of the community by the end of August, in addition to the delivery of the project to renovate the central square of the favela, in partnership with Escola da Cidade; kickoff the Museum of Public Art, which brings art to the entire envelope of the favela, involving residents in the process of creating all the artistic murals; the hiring by the City Hall, via the Work Operation Program (POT), of 20 residents to work in the care of the community garden that will be built, and of another 22 residents to work in the care of squares around the region. Sabesp has also donated 176 water measurement unit (UMA) boxes and 50 water tanks to the community.
In progress are the professional qualification of 60 inhabitants of the territory, 76 housing improvements, training of eight community leaders, construction of 16 sustainable two-story houses and the mapping of all the families that will be part of the Takeoff Program. Robust work was also carried out in the area of training, with a diagnosis to understand which techniques should advance first in the courses offered by SEBRAE and SENAI. Through this partnership, the first group of the Nail Design course has already been closed, and registration for the Computer Assembly and Maintenance course is in progress.
Among the next steps are the beginning of the construction of the Central Square of the community and its surroundings, investment in the Seed Project of 10 entrepreneurs of the territory and regularization of the favela’s lighting. To monitor the progress of the works and scheduled deliveries, a “dignometer” was installed in the central square, a panel that will be constantly updated so that the local population is aware of all the actions that are being carried out. It will bring the percentages of revitalized spaces, transformed housing, people in the job market and qualified people.
“We believe that individual well-being depends on collective well-being, and that, with the commitment and investment of the private sector, in partnership with the public sphere, we will have the way to make our country a better place for everyone. In the Favela 3D project, by Gerando Falcões, we found more than hope: the real possibility of improving the life of 80% of the favelas in Brazil, which are small, have up to 500 families. Our commitment is to invest and give visibility to the transformation in the Favela of Haiti to show Brazilian companies and entities that together it is possible to change for the better”, highlights Roberta Medina, VP of Brand Reputation at Rock World.
Among the actions already carried out, one of the highlights of the press conference in Favela do Haiti was the delivery of improvements to the homes of residents of the community, with installation of floors, tiles, doors and windows; painting of walls and facades; masonry and roof constructions; hydraulic reforms; home repairs, among others. Edu Lyra, founder and president of the NGO Gerando Falcões, closely follows the evolution of the project and emphasizes the impact on the lives of the people who live there.
“We have been working intensively in favelas for two years to create this Favela 3D model. We believe that the opposite of poverty is not wealth, but dignity. It means that everyone has access to basic infrastructure, piped water, sanitation, lighting, wi-fi, a decent house to live in, daycare, school, training, employment and income. In this partnership with The Town, we brought the first favela in the city of São Paulo to be part of Favela 3D. With that, we have the chance to do something unprecedented in one of the biggest cities on planet Earth and prove that we, as a society, can overcome poverty, can leave it behind and build a situation of dignity in the favelas”, celebrates .
The entire project is carried out jointly with the residents, and the perspective is that, in December 2024, it will be completed. Find out below some of the data obtained in the diagnostic phase and the goals set by Favela 3D in Favela do Haiti.
