In June 1973, Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn worked on connecting military computers with communications satellites and mobile radios. What they didn’t expect is that the “problem” they were supposed to solve for the military would profoundly change humanity. At the age of 80, completed at the end of June, the same month that the protocol for the operation of the internet was created by them 50 years ago, Cerf spoke exclusively to SBT News about how the co-creation of the TCP/IP protocols went, a technical standard that established the formation of the worldwide computer network.
In 30 minutes of his busy agenda, Cerf spoke about the challenges of creating the internet from a network of the Armed Forces of the United States, the Arpanet, and the innovations that were created from it. The mathematician also mentioned issues such as misinformation and artificial intelligence, reported what he would have done differently on the internet and gave his vision of the future of the network.
The “Mr. Internet”, nickname earned thanks to the feat, commented on Brazil and left a message for Brazilian users. Check out the interview in full below.
Who is Mr. Internet
Mathematician and computer scientist Vinton Gray Cerf, 80, is vice president and chief Internet evangelist at Google. Born on June 23, 1943, in New Heaven, Connecticut (USA), he is married to Sigrid and has two children, David and Bennett.
Cerf holds a BA in Mathematics from Stanford University (1965), an MA in 1970 and a PhD in Computer Science in 1972 from the University of California, Los Angeles. He has two patents: an Internet Radio Communication System and a Distributed Task Execution System.
Long before accidentally co-creating the internet’s technical standard, the mathematician worked cleaning and refilling coffee machines at the age of 14. His first job in the technology field was working at a software test case for Formula 1 engines, which were also used in the Saturn V rocket of the Apollo Program.
A big fan of classical music, Cerf loves Häagen Daz coffee ice cream and has JRR Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” and Isaac Asimov’s “Foundation” series among his favorite books.
He was also a founder of the Internet Society organization, being president between 1992 and 1995, and a member of the board of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) between 2000 and 2007.
