Once upon a time there was a social network, its name was Twitter. Twitter became very popular for its ease, respect and democratization of information. Its users could connect from anywhere in the world and, if someone decided to disseminate Nazi and racist speech, that person was banned from the platform.
Then came a very rich South African emerald mines heir, his fortune revolves around billions. This heir, known as Elon Musk, spent US$ 44 billion of his fortune (R$ 208 billion in current quotations) to acquire the bird for him.
In doing so, everything that was good on the platform was quickly destroyed. Starting with moderation, that anyone could write the most varied absurdities without any kind of punishment.
Then there was publicity, which Elon Musk hates. Next was the free verified account peck he left us, anyone who wanted it would have to pay. Not happy, the evil billionaire heir decided to limit the amount of daily tweets, especially non-paying accounts.
Until that Elon Musk decided to kill the bird once and for all and replace it with a boring and boring “X”. Aah if he was Brazilian and Ibama found out. And Twitter died for good, the end!
How are things from now on?
The new white X on a black background has replaced the blue bird on the desktop version of the social network, but has yet to appear in the mobile app.
“Tweets” will also be replaced, according to Twitter owner Elon Musk, and the posts will be named “x’s”.
The billionaire changed his profile picture to the new logo and added “X.com” to his Twitter bio.
Musk wants to create a “super app” called X – his vision for a new kind of social media platform he’s been talking about for months.
On Sunday, the billionaire said he was trying to change Twitter’s logo, tweeting:
“And soon we will say goodbye to the Twitter brand and, gradually, to all the birds.”
He then shared a photo of the new X brand projected onto the side of Twitter’s San Francisco headquarters.
Musk, who changed the company’s name to X Corp, said the replacement “should have been done a long time ago”.
He posted an image of a flashing X on Twitter, and later, in a Twitter Spaces audio chat, replied “Yes” when asked if the Twitter logo would change.
Linda Yaccarino, Twitter’s new chief executive, wrote on the platform that the rebrand was an exciting new opportunity.
“Twitter made a huge impression and changed the way we communicate. Now, X will go further, transforming the global town square,” she said.
The bird is named Larry, which Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said in 2011 was a tribute to basketball star and Boston Celtics legend Larry Bird.
People took to Twitter to mourn the loss of the logo, including Martin Grasser, who designed it in 2012.
“Today we say goodbye to this big blue bird,” he said.
The tweet was later shared by Jack Dorsey, Twitter’s best-known co-founder with a goat emoji, meaning ‘greatest of all time’.
The app of everything
For some people in Asia, super apps, including PayTM from India and GoJek from Indonesia, have been a vital part of everyday life in recent years.
The apps allow users to pay for services through a financial system.
WeChat is a messaging and social media platform that has evolved into one of the biggest apps in the region in terms of variety of services and number of users.
Last year, it was estimated that there were 1.29 billion users in China alone.
Drew Benvie, social media commentator and founder of Digital Agency, Battenhall said:
“Musk is going full steam ahead into the everything app space, leaving the old Twitter in his wake and eyeing the success of Asian pioneers like WeChat and Moj. Success in just a few additional services like shopping or payments could be all that is needed to make X better than Twitter. But there are already so many alternatives, so Musk and company are playing a huge catch-up game.”
Twitter’s website says its logo, depicting a blue bird, is ‘our most recognizable asset’.
“That’s why we protect him so much,” he added.
The company temporarily replaced the logo in April with Dogecoin’s Shiba Inu dog, helping to boost the meme coin’s market cap.
Later, Musk was accused of insider trading by a group of Dogecoin investors, who claimed that he profited by increasing the value of Dogecoin.
new brand fast
Business commentator Justin Urquhart Stewart said Twitter’s “loyal but aging base” would not like the changes.
“The younger generations have moved on to other apps and Twitter feels a little old-fashioned. Elon Musk has to be careful as you are almost starting from scratch with an older audience while also undermining the original brand,” he said.
O rebranding Twitter’s very fast also caused some security concerns.
Jake Moore, global cyber consultant at security firm ESET, said transitioning from one company name to another could encourage phishing, where criminals impersonate people or organizations to steal user data.
“A rebrand is the perfect opportunity to send phishing emails asking users to log in via a new URL from a link within that email, but of course that link would not be genuine and this is where people could be tricked into handing over their genuine Twitter credentials without the usual level of caution. Cybercriminals can easily take advantage of this, especially those looking for this new URL.”
x obsession
Musk has long had a fascination with the letter X, though no one really knows why.
One of his first commercial ventures in 1999 was known as X.com which was an online banking platform.
Just three years later, Musk made $165 million when X.com – then merged with PayPal – was bought by eBay.
It also owns the X.com domain name, which now redirects to Twitter.
Musk is also chief executive of SpaceX, an American commercial aerospace company founded in 2002.
There is also the name of his first child with musician Grimes – X Æ A-12 Musk.
Musk also recently released his long-awaited startup of artificial intelligence, xAI, in an attempt to build an alternative to ChatGPT.
