The ReCiclo Movement, a pioneering program by C&A which is dedicated to the correct disposal of used pieces, celebrates its sixth anniversary this month with a remarkable milestone of 270 thousand pieces collected, equivalent to an impressive 80 tons of clothes! This year alone, the program has already collected 28 tons out of a total of 57 thousand units collected. Launched in 2017, the program is currently present in 206 C&A stores spread across all Brazilian regions.
The initiative not only contributes to reducing the inappropriate disposal of textile waste, but also promotes sustainability and social responsibility. According to the Brazilian Association of the Textile and Clothing Industry (Abit), around 170 thousand tons of textile waste are inappropriately disposed of every year in Brazil.
The volume of discarded used parts is enormous in the country, and we are working increasingly in the manufacturing, production and end-of-use processes to change this reality. The existence of the ReCiclo Movement helps us fulfill our mission of offering more positive fashion for our customers and for society as a whole, highlights Cyntia Kasai, executive manager of ESG at C&A.
When depositing an item in the program’s green ballot boxes, the brand offers three ways to properly dispose of the clothes: upcycling, recycling or donation. Through the upcycling, fabric fibers from discarded pieces are recovered and transformed into new products, contributing to the circular economy. More than 10 thousand pieces went through this process, while almost 25 thousand pieces were sent for recycling and more than 37 thousand pieces in good condition were donated to partner institutions. These donations are made in collaboration with Instituto C&A, the social pillar of C&A Brazil, which has been operating for over 30 years supporting communities and social causes.
Furthermore, since 2021, C&A has launched capsules from the circular jeans collection, manufactured from the reuse of pieces collected in ReCiclo ballot boxes and production leftovers. This initiative was recognized with the 2022 Eco Amcham Highlight Award.
Today, the ReCiclo Movement is a consolidated strategic initiative of C&A, being incorporated from the beginning in all opened stores. In addition to disposing of clothing, customers can also correctly dispose of empty cosmetic and electronic bottles and packaging, ensuring that these items are disposed of in an environmentally responsible manner through partnerships with specialized companies.
The invitation is made. All customers who want to participate in this movement for more positive fashion can go to one of the 206 stores and deposit the items of clothing they no longer want in our ReCiclo Movement ballot boxes, regardless of the condition of the item and the brand, concludes Cyntia.
The celebration of six years of the movement is a testimony to C&A’s continued commitment to promoting solidarity practices, while contributing to the construction of a more conscious and ecological future.
