Denzel Washington is one of those rare unanimities in cinema. Honestly, I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like him and doesn’t admire his talent. And now that he’s in great The Protector – Final Chapter in cinema (it’s really worth it), I decided to list here 6 films with the actor that are available on streaming. I didn’t put The protector 2014 (HBO Max) and neither Protector 2 (Paramount Plus) – but just click on the titles to see the full review.
The Bone Collector – Netflix
I think it’s my favorite film by the actor – I’ve seen it about 15 times. Lincoln Rhyme (Denzel Washington), a renowned police officer, suffers an accident and becomes quadriplegic. After four years in a bed, Rhyme focuses on the idea of suicide and tries to convince those around him to help him with euthanasia. Everything changes when a serial killer begins to act in the city. Rhyme begins to help with the case and modern means of investigation come to his house. Amelia Donaghy (Angelina Jolie), a street cop, receives his guidance in the investigation. The problem is Howard Cheney (Michael Rooker), the police chief, a monument to incompetence who only knows how to create obstacles.
The Perfect Plan – Netflix/ Globoplay
Wow, good movie! Directed by Spike Lee, it begins with robbers breaking into a bank and taking hostages. The police quickly arrive at the scene, but detectives Frazier (Denzel) and Mitchell (Chiwetel Ejiofor) are surprised by the intelligence of the bandit leader, Dalton Russell (Clive Owen). When Frazier’s ability begins to be questioned, another enigmatic character (Jodie Foster) appears in the story.
Time of Glory – Netflix
Denzel won his first Oscar – for supporting role – with this stupendous 1989 film. During the American Civil War, Robert Gould Shaw (Matthew Broderick), a young man with no experience, but from an influential family, receives command of the first battalion. And this one is exclusively made up of black soldiers. It is directed by Edward Zwick and also has Morgan Freeman in the cast.
Macbeth – Apple TV Plus
Lord Macbeth (Denzel Washington) is returning home from a war, where he became a hero. Halfway there, three witches approach him and tell him that he will be the next king of Scotland. By telling his wife (Frances McDormand) the news, they plan to murder the current king of the country and thus guarantee Macbeth’s reign. And so begins the tragedy that involves murder, madness, and ambition. Of course Denzel rocks. He is already a much older Macbeth (different from the play). But he has a strength, a desperation, that sends a shiver down your spine. He makes it very clear that he sees this as his last chance. Sensational, it gave Denzel another Oscar nomination.
Flames of Vengeance – Star Plus e Prime Video
A huge wave of kidnappings sweeps Mexico, causing many of its wealthiest citizens to hire bodyguards for their children. John Creasy (Denzel Washington) is an unmotivated former CIA agent, who is taken to Mexico City by his friend Rayburn (Christopher Walken). Without a job, he accepts the proposal to be little Pita’s (Dakota Fanning) bodyguard. She is a 9-year-old girl who is the daughter of an industrialist (Marc Anthony). Annoyed by the girl’s constant questions, John initially sees his new job as a burden. But little by little, he creates a friendship with Pita and begins to have a new energy in his life. Pita’s kidnapping undoes this situation, making him, despite being injured, set out to rescue her at any cost. The 2004 film, and now all these years later, Denzel has reunited with Dakota in the cast of The Protector: Final Chapter.
A Limit Between Us – Netflix e Globoplay
Denzel and Viola Davis play a poor couple in the 50s. Troy is a garbage man and Rose is a housewife. They have a teenage son together and are apparently happy, despite money problems. But in truth, Troy carries hurt from his youth. He was considered too old when the American Football League finally began accepting black players. This left him with eternal pain, which means he prevents his son from following the path of sport, creating great tension in the family. Viola won the supporting Oscar, and Denzel inexplicably lost to Casey Affleck.
