Have you ever wondered if it is possible to have a prosperous career without sacrificing your health and well-being? The psychoanalyst and CEO of the Institute for Research & Studies of Women and Multiple Existences (Ipefem), Ana Tomazelli, believes so. In his new book, titled Career without Suffering: how to be successful without losing your health and without fighting with those close to you, released by publisher Brasport, she explores ways to achieve professional success without the need for exhaustion and suffering. The work offers a guide to building a lighter and more productive career, while promoting the importance of recognizing and addressing issues related to mental health in the workplace.
Ana Tomazelli argues that the idea that suffering is inevitable in a career is a myth, and challenges this belief based on her experience and expertise as a psychoanalyst. She suggests that, although everyone has challenges in their careers, it is possible to face them without becoming hostage to suffering and stress.
The work, which has 183 pages, offers a detailed approach to building a career without sacrificing health and harmony in personal relationships. Ana emphasizes the importance of naming and addressing violence, including microaggressions, which often go unnoticed in the workplace. She believes that by taking a stand and communicating problems, it is possible to create a healthier and more productive environment. This is the principle of the book, and also what led the author to found, in 2019, Ipefem, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that focuses on research and education in mental health.
What we do is essentially teach people how to identify and interrupt processes of internal and external socio-emotional violence, whether in the family, in relationships or at work, with a strong focus on work, highlights Ana.
It was in this wake that the psychoanalyst wrote her new work.
The name Career without suffering It was born from a class I was teaching, and as a psychoanalyst, I was explaining that, in fact, there is no career without suffering, there is no life without suffering completely. But, there are people who sleep cuddling with suffering, and I challenge the logic that we only learn by suffering, that if it is difficult because it is good, or there is always a lesson to be learned, and that life needs to be this weight and this difficulty. Working doesn’t have to be hard, it doesn’t have to be painful most of the time. Of course, we will have high and difficult mountains along the way, but we need to talk about building a professional life without this stamp of intrinsic suffering, he emphasizes.
The author also highlights that this perspective should not be confused with toxic positivity, which ignores negative emotions. It encourages emotional integrity and the recognition of human frailties as a fundamental part of humanization in the workplace.
In the book, I tell the two burnouts I went through, and how crucial they were for me to decide to have a career without suffering. Due to our upbringing in a society guided by religiosity, our generation grew up with the idea of suffering as salvation. So, all professional logic also ends up based on this, after all, politics, culture, religion and society are mixed in this perception, concludes the psychoanalyst.
The book has already received praise from renowned professionals, including Raniere Zoccoli, journalist and presenter of TV network!, which highlighted the importance of the tips offered by Ana Tomazelli; Elisa Rosenthal, founder of the Instituto Mulheres do Imobilirio, who defined the book as a real map to find paths in complex career moments; and Erico Ferro, businessman and mentor, who described the work as a required reading for those seeking professional and personal fulfillment.
The official launch of the book Career without Suffering: how to be successful without losing your health and without fighting with those close to you will be held this Tuesday (17) at Livraria Drummond, located in Conjunto Nacional, in So Paulo (SP).
