The award-winning American version of the series The Office could win a reboot. According to sources, the official announcement of the new series by Greg Daniels, the same creator of the original version, would be made after the end of the Hollywood writers’ strike. This news may leave fans somewhat confused, as Daniels himself had previously commented on the possibility of expanding the universe of the series, instead of restarting it.
The series, which had nine seasons, lasted from 2005 to 2013 and developed several characters through the charisma of the original cast, simplicity and, above all, masterfully taking advantage of sarcastic and self-deprecating humor. Names like Pam Beesly (Jenna Fischer), Jim Halpert (John Krasinski), Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson) and, of course, Michael Scott (Steve Carell) are kept in the imagination of movie lovers. sitcoms (as I am, and so is the Adnews team!) with much appreciation, since what made the series so good was the way these actors related to each other, raising a question: does the series need a reboot?.
It’s not new today that Hollywood remakes old successful products for a more current audience, like Spider-Man Homecoming (2017) and The Panthers (2019), but there are cases where there is no apparent need, or even a public outcry, to completely remake a series or film.
With The Office, the movement is similar. A sitcom continues to attract many people to this day, remaining one of the most relevant series in recent times, even ten years after its end. It’s no wonder that, every day, memes like No, God. Please, no! (from English, which means No, for God’s sake, no) and Thats what she said (in free translation, That was what she said) are shared on pages on social media. However, a quick and simple analysis of the general entertainment picture already indicates the main reasons for reboots currently, as the desire to profit from the public’s nostalgia at the expense of new ideas.
It could just be the side fanboy Speaking more loudly, however, remaking a series that still has such an impact on society presents itself more as a financial idea than a true creative inspiration. Despite this, there are many possibilities for this new version of office life at Dunder Mifflin to be successful, especially if the public is open to new proposals.
The series was conceived before the big boom technology of recent times, when devices such as Faxes and Pager were still common. Although this characteristic gives a certain charm to the original series, the possibility of seeing what office dynamics would be like today, with the rise of social networks and smartphones, would be interesting (Michael would clearly profile the company in TikTok). In parallel to this, the possibility of bringing even more social issues, something that the series magically dealt with at a time when this was not common, another aspect that is on the rise and this new version can present.
Another factor that can offer a quality product is the possible return of the series creator. Now, it is enough to know if the original team and cast would return as producers for this new bet, as that would calm the hearts of the biggest fans a little more. hardcore from The Office (have I made it clear that I’m part of that group? *laughs*), who are very concerned on social media.
Despite positive reactions on the internet, information about a reboot were misled by Daniels. However, he showed interest in expanding the series’ universe in the same way as The Mandalorian an extension of Star Wars. It is important to mention that a spin-off series, focused on Dwight, titled The Farmthere was a pilot episode produced, but it ended up being cancelled.
What’s left for the public to do is wait and hope that, if a new series in The Office universe is confirmed, it will be done well (that’s what she said).
