It wasn’t long ago that Artificial Intelligence reached its peak here in Brazil, and since then, it has been featured in conferences, newspaper articles… Many people have accessed new websites and even downloaded apps to test and discover the new wave of the moment. It wasn’t mandatory, it just happened. An understanding of the needs that the current situation demands. To give you an idea, at the beginning, the ChatGPT It was all in English, and even that was not a limiting factor. A race to update the LinkedIn with AI took over the scene. Nothing against. My reflections today are precisely about this: intentionality. It arises from the need, from the recognition/understanding that something is relevant for us to dedicate time and effort to do so.
Diversity has been on the agenda for a few years now, it was encouraged and gained even more prominence during the heyday of ESG. Public and private policies are discussed in this context (by the way, even some setbacks resurface, such as the issue of same-sex unions). There are studies and more studies that show that yes, diversity is good for business.
However, there are difficulties, and I don’t see commitment similar to the example I am amateurishly trying to compare along these lines. If there is a linguistic change with the aim of having an inclusive language (todes, delu, etc.) I’ve heard things like: I can’t do it. There are those who insist on attributing the masculine pronoun, or vice versa, even when faced with a person who has a name, clothing and feminine/masculine appearance.
In the racial issue it is no different, and there are many difficulties. The same occurs with ableist expressions, in which their exclusion from the vocabulary does not happen because some people simply cannot do it.
You can tell me that cultural change is more complex. I understand. But what about intentionality? If we understand diversity as an important asset for business, which brings creativity, competitive potential and even avoids reputational crises, we will understand that these difficulties are just stages in the transformation process. Just like we do with so many other situations in our lives, in our daily lives. Intentionality is in everything, in the decisions we make, and what keeps us firm in our purpose. Because difficulties, which I understand as challenges, will always exist. But, the motivation to keep us going to overcome them is our response to what we consider to be truly important.
If we understand diversity as a business strategy (how can we not understand it?), how can we not immerse ourselves in this universe, letting go of old concepts, of culture, which is sometimes intrinsic, but which needs to respond to changes, new needs?
So, my provocation is to you who understand diversity as indispensable. It is an invitation to intentionality, because just like with AI, there is no shortage of tools for you to become literate, be autonomous in your searches and learn. Something that will be advantageous for everyone.
