Netflix, one of the main streaming services streaming in the world, removed the basic plan of R$25.90, one of the most popular among Brazilian users, for new subscribers. The company, which has already implemented this measure in places like Italy and the United Kingdom, announced just under a month ago that the changes would come into force in the following weeks, although it did not disclose a specific date.
Now the streaming It only has three plan options in Brazil: one with advertisements, costing R$18.90, the standard plan for R$39.90 and the premium one, which offers 4K definition, for R$55.90. In addition to Brazil, this change will also be applied in Australia, Germany, Spain, Mexico and Japan.
The closure of Netflix’s basic plan occurs in a year in which a series of measures were implemented on the platform, such as the new plan that includes advertisements at the beginning and during the broadcast of programs, restrictions on downloading films and series, in addition to the ban password sharing.
For those who were worried about the changes at Netflix, this may be a good alternative, considering that in the United States, where the basic plan is still available, there has been an adjustment in prices. The basic plan went from $9.99 to $11.99, while the premium plan increased from $19.99 to $21.99. The standard plans, both with ads and without ads, remained priced at US$6.99 and US$15.49, respectively.
These price changes come in response to a report released by the company on October 18, which revealed an increase of 9 million subscribers on the platform in the period from July to September. Currently, Netflix has around 250 million users, of which 6 million (approximately 30% of total new subscriptions) joined the platform after the creation of the plan with advertisements.
In this new report, Netflix showed a 7.8% increase in revenue over the last three months, with US$1.9 billion raised in that period. On the stock exchange, the streaming platform’s shares grew 11%.
If conditions are good, why the increase?
Although the company’s current conditions are favorable, the price increase was already being considered by the American Netflix itself. This measure was evaluated as a possibility afterHollywood strikes. At the time, the justification was the need for new productions after the period of strike for both the scriptwriters, who have already returned to work, and the actors, who remain on strike to date. However, in a new statement, the company announced that the strike movement did not affect productions that much because most of them were recorded and old content, such as the Suits series, continued to be the most watched on the platform.
Considering that the strike and the elimination of the basic plan did not generate significant problems for Netflix and that the number of subscribers was positively impacted, the question arises as to the reason for the increase in prices. One of the hypotheses raised is inflation in the United States, which could be pressuring the company to reevaluate prices in the land of Uncle Sam. It remains uncertain whether this trend extends to other countries, such as Brazil, or if it is just an isolated case.
