Since the first edition of Rock in RioIn 1985, more than 11.2 million visitors visited the four Rock Cities that Rio de Janeiro hosted, in addition to those in Lisbon, Madrid and Las Vegas. These fans watched 3,816 artists in 130 days of magic.
The City of Rock where incredible stories happen, where connections are formed and where moments become eternal. Friends who get together year after year, families who turn the festival into a tradition and couples who find love in the midst of music. Over these 40 years, Cidade do Rock was the stage for special moments that turned into memories that last a lifetime, and each edition is saved forever.
From now on, these moments will overflow fans’ memories and will come together on a platform called ‘Great Encounters’. There, with the help of the fan, a great protagonist of this trajectory, we will discover the thousands of stories of the great meetings that the City of Rock promoted. It will be the opportunity for festival fans to share their magical moments experienced in these 22 editions of Rock in Rio (nine in Rio de Janeiro).
Grandes Encontros is part of the content marathon of the ‘Rock in Rio 40 years and forever’ campaign, in which Rock in Rio plays with the past and the future, reinforcing that the biggest music and entertainment festival in the world is in the emotional memory fans and is part of their lives.
The celebration of the event’s 40th anniversary also promises a Rock City full of new features, such as: new World Stage; Sunset even bigger; a new area called ‘Global Village’; an original musical and much more. Rock in Rio is scheduled for the 13th, 14th, 15th, 19th, 20th, 21st and 22nd of September 2024, in Cidade do Rock, in Rio de Janeiro.
Roberto Medina, creator of Rock in Rio, believes that music has a transformative and restorative power in people’s lives, and the festival becomes a guiding thread for these experiences to happen.
For almost 40 years I’ve been hearing the most incredible stories that people had with Rock in Rio or that the festival, in some way, gave them. Be it a meeting of fans with idols, friends, new couples, even the realization of deepest dreams. It’s exciting for me to open this space so that fans can share with everyone the power and importance that Rock in Rio has in their lives, the unforgettable memories that each one keeps within themselves. People are the protagonists of our show and they are the ones who make 40 years of Rock in Rio so emblematic, now and always. In fact, we were the first festival to light up the audience and we will continue to do so. We are one thing, said Medina.
The platform is a space to gather stories and relive memories of people, brands, collaborators and everyone who has a special relationship with Rock in Rio. The festival invites fans to immortalize their stories in a special, illustrated way that can be shared on networks social events of the festival, marking this meeting forever.
To upload a story on the platform, it’s very simple, just access the official website, fill out the registration form and share a testimonial in up to a thousand characters. Fans can also upload a photo. It is important to remember that anything goes, except hateful speeches and inappropriate content, the platform will have moderation to better meet the community’s principles.
One of the stories that will be featured in ‘Grandes Encontros’ is that of Carlos Eduardo Ortega, who says that Rock in Rio has always been a dream for him and, on his 15th birthday, in 2015, he received the ticket as a gift from his parents. A week before, his grandfather passed away, but the feeling of realizing his big dream was decisive. Even shaken by the pain of loss, Cadu understood that it would be his grandmother’s wish for him to go and live every second.
I went and experienced one of the most beautiful moments of my life with the certainty that she was there. I promised that I would never miss the opportunity to live this dream that never dies, as well as all the love I felt for my grandmother. Since then I haven’t missed any edition, I continue to meet up with all the friends I met and with each new edition I convince other friends and family to try this beautiful experience. Rock in Rio is love, a memory for life, my dream that never dies, said Ortega.
In 1985, it was the year that the military dictatorship in the country ended. Young people were eager for the freedom they dreamed of and Claudio Pinho’s story meets that moment, in a time before certain traffic rules. He says that his older sister, aged 23, took eight to Rock in Rio, in a 1968 Itamaraty. The most impressive thing is that the car still exists and the means of transport used by Claudio on a daily basis, which keeps it restored It is customized.
Fabiano Gil da Silva tells a story that not only transcends generations, but also moves. At the first edition he attended, in 2001, his late wife was pregnant with the couple’s first child. In 2013, Fabiano took young Bernardo, then 12 years old, to share the emotion and experience of his first Rock in Rio.
Luana Varella’s story with Rock in Rio begins in 2001, when Sandy & Junior performed at the festival. At the time, aged 11 and with zero reais in her pocket, Luana enjoyed the show on the radio. Years passed and she never gave up going to the festival. In 2011, when Rock in Rio returned to Rio de Janeiro, Luana was there on the first day. Today, Luana has already attended seven editions, including Rock in Rio Lisboa.
The feeling was unique. A movie played in my head, I remembered every tear that came out of my eye back in 2001, in my dark room, of that little girl who thought this dream was impossible. Being at Rock in Rio every edition gives me a boost that I can’t explain. a mix of hope, strength and a lot of determination, that only those who step on that lawn know what I’m talking about, explains Luana.
And to celebrate 40 years of history in the right way, the festival will feature an exhibition, book and even a new musical for 2024. Furthermore, the public can start their countdown not only to the City of Rock, but to festive days throughout the year. The first of them takes place at the turn of the year, at one of the main New Year’s Eve celebrations in the world, Copacabana, where Rock in Rio will be honored. The public on Copacabana beach, or watching on television, will be able to watch a presentation worthy of celebrating 40 years, with a drone show, orchestral performances and much more.
If in 2022 Rock in Rio won the Uirapuru show and the The Town hosted ‘The Town, The Musical’, the next edition will be no different. A new production, ‘Rock in Rio Originals’, will bring the event and Rio de Janeiro as a narrative. Created by Roberto Medina, musical direction by Z Ricardo, script and artistic direction by Charles Meller, this project will come to life inside and outside of Cidade do Rock.
The stages will also be different. The Sunset Stage will be larger and for the first time in the festival’s history, the stage for major meetings, a favorite with the public and critics, will have the same stage as the giant Palco Mundo, reinforcing all its power and equality.
The World Stage, with a structure measuring 104m in front and 30m in height, will receive new scenography. Several surprises promise to delight and generate a connection with the public, in addition to selfie opportunities, with a dynamic look that will bring even more beauty to the City of Rock.
