The application Threads is going through some changes. Among them, the novelty emerged that the app allow users to delete their accounts while keeping the linked account Instagram.
To sign up for the app, which works similarly to X (old Twitter), you need to have an Instagram account. However, there were complaints from users about it being impossible to delete Threads alone, without deleting the Instagram account. Instagram boss Adam Mosseri revealed the change in a post on app of short texts from Meta.
Initially treated as a Twitter killer, Threads struggled to sustain record growth. In October, Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg revealed that three months after its launch in July this year, the app was attracting around 100 million monthly users, a drop of more than half.
When Threads was revealed to the world, it was seen as a direct challenger to X, owned by Elon Musk. But the app went live without a number of features, such as search and direct messaging, found on rival platforms. The inability to fully delete an account without deleting the associated Instagram account has been heavily criticized.
Users could deactivate but not delete their Threads account if they wanted to keep their linked Instagram profile.
The new feature will be accessible in the settings menu, in the Delete or deactivate profileaccording to Mosseri posted on Threads.
We have been clear with Meta since the Threads service was launched. We said that people should be able to delete their profiles and account information without it impacting their Instagram accountsaid the UK’s privacy watchdog, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), when Meta first announced the change would take place in September.
ICO claims to be pleased that the discussions have resulted in effective changes, adding that people should not have to sacrifice their use of one service to be removed from another.
It was also announced that Threads users will soon be able to opt out of automatic sharing of posts on Instagram and Facebook. While this feature directly allowed Meta to raise awareness about Threads among the billions that are present on these platforms, experts say the feature was unpopular among many users.
