More than 23 billion classes have been completed and almost a billion and a half hours have been dedicated to learning on the platform
Duolingo kicked off its holiday learning celebration with the release of its Global Language Report, which examines the latest language study trends based on data from the platform’s learners.
According to the report, more than 23 billion classes were completed and almost one and a half billion hours were dedicated to learning on Duolingo throughout the year. Additionally, more than 32 million people studied more than one language this year.
The document also revealed which languages were most studied throughout 2023, pointing out that Korean continues to grow in popularity, jumping to 6th in the global ranking.
“Languages are a bridge between cultures. We see cultural trends reflected in data from our 74 million monthly learners around the world. For example, we have seen interest in Korean entertainment such as K-Pop and K-dramas increase recently and this is reflected in Duolingo’s data. We can clearly see the growing demand for Korean language study, especially from younger learners,” said Dr. Cindy Blanco, senior learning scientist and editor-in-chief of learning content at Duolingo.
Portuguese entered the Top 10, taking Russian off the list, and among users’ reasons for learning a new language are the desire to connect with people (63%) and prepare for travel (18%). According to the survey, 72% of students learning Portuguese are under 30 years old.
The most studied language on the platform continues to be English and occupies first place in 122 countries, three more than last year.
Duolingo also launched the Year in Review experience, a look back at users’ year-long learning journey. All students can relive the year on Duolingo and share personalized cards on social media to celebrate their achievements.
The Year in Review experience is available to all Duolingo students who completed at least 10 classes in 2023.
