Heavy Metals Band is the name of the musical project created to defend marine life and raise awareness about the contamination of fish by heavy metals.
The band was created in support of Sea Shepherd Brazil, an ocean protection entity, and its members are vegan or vegetarian artists who support the cause. Among them, Rodrigo Lima, lead singer of the band Dead Fish, Dirk Verbeuren, drummer of Megadeth, Juninho Sangiorgio, bassist of Ratos de Poro, and Iara Bertolaccini, former guitarist of Blastfemme.
The project includes the release of the single “Ciclo Metal” in Portuguese and a version in English, both composed in partnership with the artists.
Created by the agency Wieden+Kennedy São Paulo and audio production by Mugshot, the project is in partnership with Billboard Brasil magazine, which supports the initiative’s media strategy and editorial content. In addition to the music, a music video created by the British studio Fromm, specializing in 3D art and illustrations, is available on the main streaming platforms.
A scientific study carried out in Brazil and published in Elsevier’s journal Regional Studies in Marine Science revealed that 100% of the fish species surveyed had some heavy metal in their organism. To raise awareness about cases like this, Sea Shepherd Brasil followed another of its radical strategies to address the cause of the ocean, and found in the creation of the band Heavy Metals an unconventional way to dialogue with the public.
Taking inspiration from the maximalist and colorful style found on vintage covers of heavy metal albums, the video features fantastic characters inspired by the mythology of the kingdom of Atlantis, and occult elements so popular in rock audiovisual productions from the 1980s.
