For the seventh consecutive year, now with the support and curation of Revista Billboard, São Paulo hosted the WME Awards Brasil, an event to celebrate the female presence in our music. The meeting brought together big names in art on the stage of the Teatro Srgio Cardoso this Thursday (14).
One of the night’s honorees was Rita Lee. The singer, who died in May this year, made history in Brazilian music with engaging and unforgettable lyrics. The first artist to pay tribute was Lusa Sonza, who opened WME 2023 to the sound of “Fruto Proibido”, and was followed by Julia Mestre in Doce Vampiro and Paula Lima in an electrifying performance of Mutante.
The other great honoree of the night was Dona Onete, who continues to follow her path at the age of 84. She shared the stage with exponents of the new generation, such as singer Aila, and with veterans, such as Daniela Mercury from Bahia.
The event was led by Preta Gil and Larissa Luz. Preta, who presented all editions of the award, was applauded by the public. The singer just announced that she beat the bowel cancer she had been treating.
Absence of finalists
Although of great national importance, being the only award in Brazil exclusively dedicated to the female category, many of the celebrity finalists who won the award did not attend the event and chose to send representatives, as was the case with Iza, MC Carol, Marina Sena, Ludmilla and Anita.
Even though she was the first to perform on the night, Lusa Sonza did not go on stage to receive the Mainstream Music award for the song Chico”, causing a real atmosphere during the performance. Later, the artist published on her social networks that she was in the dressing room and did not hear the announcement.
Other prominent names were present at the ceremony, such as Karol Conk, Ana Caas, Isis Broken, Fernanda Abreu, DJ Sophia, Titi Muller, Marimoon, among others.
In total, the 7 WME Awards featured 17 categories and 85 nominations. See the complete list of finalists and winners of the 2023 edition:
