The Super Bowl took place last Sunday night, February 13th, and along with the American Football League Finals, came the classic commercials between game breaks. Full of comedy this year and with American movie and television stars, check out the 5 best commercials that were broadcast at the event:
5. Lay’s: Stay Golden
Agency: Highdive
Many brands took the nostalgic route by revisiting classic pop culture moments at this year’s Super Bowl, but Lay’s, along with agency Highdive, traveled down memory lane with actors Paul Rudd and Seth Rogen in this fully watchable – and re-watchable – ad.
The two actors who marked their careers with comedic roles were at their best recounting their “golden years” that included everything from a road trip to a kidnapping. And of course, the memories always included the snack that marked the best years of their lives in the ad.
4. Toyota: Os Joneses
Agency: Saatchi & Saatchi L.A./Dallas
If there was one thing that marked this year’s game, it was certainly the amount of comedy among the ads. One of the biggest highlights was Toyota’s ad for the Tundra, directed by Hungry Man’s Bryan Buckley. The commercial had easy humor and impeccable performances from its all-star cast of “Joneses.”
The casting was a joke with several actors with the last name “Jones” such as Tommy Lee Jones, Leslie Jones and Rashida Jones – as well as Nick Jonas. The look Tommy Lee gives Jonas when the young talent appears on the scene was, in our opinion, one of the best performances by an A-Lister in the entire game.
3. Uber Eats: Uber not edible
Agency: Special Group U.S.
Uber Eats arguably had the best teaser strategy for its Super Bowl ad, with little snippets of its celebrity cast biting into things you shouldn’t be biting, including lipstick, deodorant and a vagina candle.
The commercial itself, which stars Jennifer Coolidge, Trevor Noah, Gwyneth Paltrow and Nicholas Braun, also drew laughs, as did a tweet from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. In the post, the organization says that consumers should not eat soap in reference to the commercial. Look:
2. GM/Chevrolet: New Generations
Agency McCann
The theme song from HBO’s classic series “The Sopranos” was enough to put football fans on edge when this commercial aired in the second quarter of the game. Viewers were treated to even more nostalgia with a remake of the show’s opening scene, but this time, with actress Jamie-Lynn Sigler, who played Tony Soprano’s daughter Meadow, in the driver’s seat.
The announcement was GM’s push for Chevrolet’s Silverado EV, and the McCann agency hired the show’s original creator, David Chase, to direct and help create “a tribute to some unanswered questions for the series finale“, as Chevrolet vice president of marketing Steve Majoros said.
1. Coinbase: WAGMI (“We’re All Going to Make It“)
Agency: Accenture Interactive
The biggest surprise of the Super Bowl was this 60-second ad by cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase that showed nothing but a QR Code bouncing up and down the screen like the “ball” in the arcade game Pong. Viewers who captured the code were taken to Coinbase.com.
On the website, they were invited to sign up for an account and receive $15 worth of free cryptocurrencies. Users of the platform before the Super Bowl had the chance to win $1 million in a contest, the winners of which will be announced in March. While some who tried to get in found flaws, the announcement made a splash on Sunday.
