The Supercopa do Brasil announced a name change: Pel will be honored by the CBF, and the competition is now called Supercopa Rei. The confrontation brings together the champions of the Brazilian Championship and the Copa do Brasil, Palmeiras and São Paulo, respectively, who will face each other in the next Sunday (4) at 4pm, in Mineiro.
Pel deserves all the honors. His legacy will always be revered by the CBF. The Supercopa Rei is a way to give even more importance to the competition, which officially opens the Brazilian football season and has already become popular with our fans, said the president of the CBF, Ednaldo Rodrigues.
In 2023, the CBF also paid tribute to Pel in the Super Cup final. At the Man Garrincha stadium, Pel’s daughters were on the pitch with the three World Cup cups won by the historic Seleção player. Palmeiras and Flamengo players also entered the field wearing number 10 shirts.
The idea of calling the competition Supercopa Rei is within the context of utmost importance for the CBF, which is to preserve the memory of Brazilian football, to ensure that new generations do not lose the reference of football’s great idols, in this case, the greatest reference of all time. This game is yet another way that we, our subjects, have to eternally pay homage to the King of football, added CBF Marketing Director, Lnin Franco.
