This year, it was my first time in Austin, at this event that makes the city pulse with a surreal energy. I think that few conferences can count on such a large structure and move an entire city like South By South West (South By, for those close to you).
From official events to unofficial meetings (there’s no shortage of party options and cocktails to choose from at the end of the day), innovation and creativity really are around every corner of that place.
Networking happens everywhere. There are many chances of an exchange with that hot contact you saw who is going to participate in the event, or even bumping into someone in line who is not from your area, but who could become a link with a potential contact. From panels to meetings and business rounds, to workshops and mentoring sessions, you don’t need to have FOMO, because even looking for a coffee and leaving the convention center area completely, you can have an unexpected exchange.
As for my focal point, which is Music Synchronization and Licensing, one of the highlights of the event was the panel that explored the crucial role of music in the narrative of audiovisual projects, highlighting how it is possible to involve composers from the beginning of projects and shape the audience experience. Many other panels also explored in depth the issue of AI in the Music Industry and how it will be important even as a monitoring instrument for remuneration and correct credits to rights holders.
With your head already buzzing with ideas, after the panels, the interesting thing is to throw yourself into the musical attractions, like one of the most incredible performances I experienced in a super unexpected environment: a church. A true artistic immersion! Another tip is to attend the premieres of major audiovisual productions that promise to be big box office successes, with Hollywood stars passing by on the sidewalk where you are.
Amidst all the feelings, emotions and electrifying atmosphere of SXSW, one certainty is possible: at every step, a new opportunity for discovery is waiting for you!
