Developed by AlmapBBDO, ‘Flying Guardians’ aims to promote environmental awareness
Illegal mining has already devastated an area of 1,409.3 hectares in 2023 in the Yanomami, Kayap and Munduruku indigenous lands. The devastated area is equivalent to the deforestation of four football fields per day and, in addition, the three territories together concentrate more than 26,400 hectares of illegal activity.
These are the data collected by the latest study by Greenpeace Brazil and, to focus on this reality, the institution launched “Flying Guardians”, developed by AlmapBBDO and composed of an independent modification that publishes a hyper-realistic flight simulator and uses satellite imagery from Planet Labs PBC to allow players to observe real incidents of illegal mining and deforestation in the Amazon.
“The Munduruku and Yanomami indigenous lands have been victims of illegal mining, resulting in deaths of indigenous people, devastation of the environment, proliferation of diseases such as malaria and contamination of rivers by mercury. The technology used in constantly updating the maps shows each player the destruction caused by illegal mining in the Amazon. To help stop this devastation, everyone can contribute by signing our petition Amaznia Livre de Garimpo, helping the Brazilian authorities in the complete removal of invaders from indigenous lands”, said Jorge Dantas, spokesman for the front of Indigenous Peoples from Greenpeace Brazil.
Customizations in the flight simulator include options for Greenpeace aircraft, commonly used in environmental protection actions, four radio channels and four command towers to provide geographic coordinates for the Munduruku and Yanomami indigenous lands, and commands to sign the petition Mining-Free Amazon.
Players will also be able to publish images of these alerts on their social networks, use the hashtags #FlyingGuardians and #AmazoniaLivreDeGarimpo, in addition to tagging the GreenpeaceBrasil profile.
“What I love most about this idea is that, at the same time as improving the player’s experience with Planet’s updated maps, it also serves to raise awareness of this cause that is so fundamental for the planet and that needs the support and action of everyone . a virtual game capable of making a huge impact in the real world”, added Marco Giannelli, CCO at AlmapBBDO.
