The models celebrate the Californian soul of the company and honor three artists from the city who have works in residence at the museum: Judy Baca, Brenna Youngblood and Frances Stark.
The new Vans collection also represents the brand’s first collaboration with a Los Angeles cultural institution, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA). The models celebrate the company’s Californian soul and honor three artists from the American state who have resident works at the museum.
In the Vans x MOCA Collection, Judy Baca (1946), a muralist who uses her public works to raise awareness of the difficulties of people in vulnerable situations, re-presents the Old Skool and Authentic models, inspired by her work “Hitting the Wall, Women in the Marathon” (1984), created to celebrate the first women’s Olympic marathon.
Brenna Youngblood (1976), who puts together discarded materials to draw attention to issues that impact her surroundings and society at large, customized the Authentic and Slip-On models, mixing abstract and colorful to create a 3D look. And Frances Stark (1967), an artist and writer who travels through the worlds of skate, punk, rap and the city of Los Angeles itself to build her works, developed her version of the Old Skool with a hand-drawn map from which presents the streets that have inspired it for some decades.
In addition to the sneakers in collaboration with the three artists, the Vans x MOCA collection features the brand’s most classic silhouettes. The models begin to be marketed from this Tuesday, 22.
