The psychological thriller genre, which has already produced so many classics in American cinema, is not very popular among Brazilian directors. So it was a welcome surprise to watch A Happy Family , which arrived in theaters this Thursday. The film works with a story that has a good atmosphere – and surprises at the end.
In the story, Eva (Grazi Massafera) has just given birth to her son and is faced with the anguish of postpartum depression in the midst of a supposedly perfect family atmosphere. His family's peaceful atmosphere is invaded by strange events when his twin daughters appear injured. Eva accused by the community. Isolated and questioned by her own husband (Reynaldo Gianecchini) she needs to overcome her fragility to prove her innocence and restructure her family.
What did I find?
The film is a great game of appearances, where not everything is what it seems! The spectator himself is left in doubt. Who is to blame for the strange situations that happen in the house? Could it be Eva, who seems to be slowly going crazy? Or the husband who has a domineering behavior under a sweet outfit?
The film takes these questions to their peak when the plot reveals itself – and in a very surprising way. The big problem in my opinion is the character of Eva herself. She does a lot of stupid things – and the character stops being believable. Even if she is suffering from postpartum depression, it is difficult to understand many of her actions. But I want to make it clear that Grazi's performance as Bia is great – as always, she is a great actress.
I had the opportunity to talk to Grazi, Reynaldo Gianecchini, director Luiz Eduardo Belmonte and screenwriter Raphael Montes. We talk about the film, breaking paradigms, and cancellation. Look here:
