For years, the Google was the absolute search engine, now, the new generation sees social networks as the way to discover information and find what they need. According to a survey by the consultancy YPulse shared with the website Axios, around 46% of people aged 18 to 24 start their searches on Google. In the above age group, from 25 to 39 years old, the number reaches 58%.
On the other hand, more than 20% of individuals aged 18 to 24 begin searching for TikTokwhile 5% look for the YouTube. As MaryLeigh Bliss, CCO at YPulse, stated when releasing the data, social media platforms went from being a place to connect with friends and family to becoming an “information highway”.
The same direction is pointed out by other research. According to a study by Adobe, 64% of young centennials, born between 1995 and 2010, choose TikTok over Google when looking for information.
The popularity of the social media format is so great that Google announced tests with a search filter that only shows short videos, for example from TikTok. For now, this is a function available to a small number of people.
If big tech signals the expansion of the feature, it is a sign that a new generation prefers to watch short videos than search on Google. However, we are still far from the end of the search engine, which has billions of annual users around the world. What is undeniably observed is the advancement of social networks as a way of searching for answers on the internet, especially among younger age groups.
