Deh Bastos, partner and executive creative director at MAP Brasil, is on the D&AD 2024 Film jury
Partner and executive creative director of MAP Brasil, Deh Bastos is back on the D&AD jury after two years. In 2022, the creative was a judge in the Media category. This year, Deh is in one of the main areas: Film.
“My first experience was in media, it was a ton of everything, knowledge, information. But being nominated as a judge is a prize, because it validates your expertise, it validates your cultural context, your cultural background, and the category says a lot”, he said.
The juries for more than 40 D&AD categories are made up of more than 350 creative leaders from around the world and, of these, 13 are Brazilian professionals. In addition to these, Luiz Sanches, CCO of global accounts for the BBDO network and chairman and partner of AlmapBBDO, will preside over the “Integrated” jury.
Deh Bastos is the guest of the week for the podcast series with the Brazilian judges at D&AD 2024.
Back to D&AD
My first experience was in the media, it was a ton of everything, knowledge, information. Now it will be film, a classic category. But being nominated as a judge is a prize, because it validates your expertise, it validates your cultural context, your cultural background, and the category says a lot. It is a very important category. At D&AD, the jury is the same as the shortlist, unlike other festivals. The first stage of the jury has already concluded, which defined the shortlist. In this first part, you receive the cases, do the online evaluation and then the finalists emerge.
Differential
The award has a lot to do with where it is from. D&AD is a very technical jury, it has a very high craft standard, it is concerned about the impact it will have on education around the world, for example.
References
The street and the people are my main references, and it’s the place I always try to return to, where I try to look. I think it’s very easy for us to become biased, it’s very easy for us to start producing things that we like. It’s a very easy trap. My constant concern is to always try to look at the street. In foreign juries, it is common to see a lot of work done by advertisers for advertisers. You see a lot of people talking well about cases that, in fact, are more cases than just the same thing.
