The decision will go to the Senate and the company spoke out, pointing out that the measure violates freedom of expression
The United States House approved a bill that could ban TikTok in the country this Saturday (20). Now, the proposal will go to the Senate. The new measure is similar to the previous version, presented in March, where the text provided for banning the Chinese app in online stores; however, the condition on the part of parliamentarians is that the platform be spun off from ByteDance, the Chinese controller, and have an owner in the United States.
In the midst of the discussions, TikTok spoke out on Sunday (21), showing concern about the decision, pointing out that the measure violates freedom of expression.
“It is regrettable that the House of Representatives is using the cover of important foreign and humanitarian assistance to once again pass a bill that would trample the free speech rights of 170 million Americans,” the company said in a statement.
If signed, the new version of the bill would give TikTok 270 days to find a new owner and also gives the White House the option of extending the deadline for another 90 days.
